Re: CPAP validation story
My guess would be that sleep apnea led to atrial fibrillation. The irregular beating of the heart can cause clots to form.
Although my mom was not diagnosed with SA she did develop AFib. She was immediately put on an anticoagulant and had numerous echoes to make sure there weren't clots "hiding" in or near her heart. That was already after she had thrown one and had a very small stroke.

On New Years Eve 2009 I was in the emergency room with pulmonary embolism. It was unclear what caused the clots but the pulmonologist suggested a sleep study. I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. Although the doctor did not say the blood clots were caused by sleep apnea, I think there is a connection.
