Which machine should I get as a backup

Post by rlamoreaux » Wed Aug 25, 2010 7:58 pm

I'm thinking about getting a second machine for backup and travel. It seems there are lots of Remstar machines on the auction site and in Craigs list for very little money. Which one is best? Which one is the quietest? I saw Remstar Plus and Remstar Pro.

RemStar machines are made by Respironics, but there are three generations of machine out there.

The oldest, or legacy machines just say RemStar.

The newer ones say M Series in addition to RemStar.

The newest ones say System One in addition to RemStar.

The Plus machines do not have any data available except for compliance (hours used.)

The Pro machines have efficacy data available for downloading. (Except for the legacy machines where the Pro does not have data, but the Pro 2 does.)

The Auto machines automatically adjust pressure in respones to the events they detect.

Some of the machines have C-Flex or A-Flex (or both) which are forms of expriratory pressure relief.

My backup is the same as what I use everyday --- So when traveling or when hauled into the hospital ALL Settings are the same and NO Retraining of myself or wife in the setup!

Personally I would recommend getting an identical backup then you don't have any problems setting it up or suddenly wondering whether you got your settings right when traveling.

If you can't, then the next best suggestion depending on how old your new machine is, if it's a couple of years old, then get the newer model and retire your current machine to the backup, that's what I do. I currently now use the S9 (since February 2010) as my primary and have two S8 AutoSet Spirits now as backups.

Not one has failed me yet which is really good news, but sometime I'm sure my luck will run out and I'll have them there as backups

Thanks
Dave
