Is lowering the number of runs necessary with a 420E?

Post by bigheadr » Tue Nov 01, 2005 5:45 pm

My runs (FL) has been about 25/hr. I have IFL1 off and IFL2 on. I have increased my max pressure to 12 (based my sleep doctor's suggestion) and the min pressure to 6. I haven't seen any difference in my runs data. Does anyone know how to lower the number of runs? Or should I be worrying about it? The rest of the numbers are satisfactory to me.

The quality of therapy SEEMS to be indepedent of number of "runs" on a 420E, but I am still more than a bit fuzzy on what "runs" means and I too would certainly like to hear someone give the definitive answer to this.

A flow run is a succession of flow limited breaths. There is no definitive "treatment answer" since flow limitations can affect people differently.

If a person receives either desats or sleep disturbances because of their flow limited breaths, then it is worth finding a way to minimize those flow limited breaths. If a person receives neither desats nor sleep disturbances because of those flow limited breaths, then they are really of little or no consequence.

Reduced my runs number dramatically

I don't know why, but my runs number is always high. One night I
switched to a different mask, and my number of runs plummetted!
So I went back to my old mask, and they went back up. A couple
of nights later, I switched to that other mask, and the numbers
decreased dramatically. A week later, I tried it again, with the
same results. My runs number is the only component that I
have not had any success in reducing with my PB 420e. Unfortunately,
we got a new puppy, and she chewed up my Comfort mask.

Ultra Mirage FF -- high run number
F&P FlexiFit HC 431 FF -- high run number
Respironics Comfort FullFaceFit -- very low run number

I used an oximeter and didn't see any different in my desaturation.
