What nasal masks are available?

Post by dashcarabba » Mon Aug 16, 2010 8:59 am

Hi all,

I am new to CPAP and feel a little lost. My doctor said that based on the sleep study I would do best with the nasal masks. What are my options.

THanks

Hi there and welcome to the forum
Go to cpap.com and just read about all the masks, there is also a section there to see all of the purchasers comments too. Also keep reading on this site it is an education in itself, we have all had problems and have helped each other out, THERE ARE MANY EXPERTS HERE ready and more than willing to help you out. Don't look at me, I'm not and expert, only been at it for just 4 months, but I definately know where to go when I have a problem or a question.
Cheers and good luck on you journey.
Nan
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

I second what nanwilson said. Go to cpap.com and study your options.

Just curious, how does the doctor know that nasal mask is best for your? Did you try on all types of mask during your sleep study?

Odd's are your doctor is incorrect again, if you mouthbreath when sleeping,(and many do) you can lose the trapped pressure in your airway (from XPAP), that opens your airway back up. Mouthbreathing can cause your treatment to fail, you can only tell for sure be having a XPAP that collects full data, and the software to read the data in real time the LCD data is close to useless for dianosis.

The way to control mouthbreathing are taping your mouth closed so no air can escape, chin straps are for the most part useless. Jim

Jim,
I ghave to dis agree with you on the chin strap thing. They work wounders for me, you can't assume that just because something dose not work for you or even most people that everyone else is going to find it usless.

I have to disagree also....there are far more people using chinstraps than taping. I used the papcap along with my comfort gel nasal mask for a long time before I switched to a FF mask. The chinstrap worked, but the Quattro was more comfortable to me.

How do you know his doctor was wrong???? How do you know he is a mouth breather???

Chin straps never worked for me or my husband, we had to tape to get good therapy. I'd love to hear from people that find that the chin strap is helpful.

Dash, welcome to the forum! While I'm glad your doctor is hooking you up with a cpap to address your health concerns, I think it's presumptive of him to think he can choose your mask style based on a sleep study. Mask choice is a VERY individual thing, and many factors need to be taken into account. It's sort of like finding the perfect pair of shoes, what works well for one won't work at all for somebody else. Go to cpap.com and look at all the masks before you decide which to try first. And please be prepared to try several before you find the best one for you. There's just no way to know beforehand which will work out.

Oh, you didn't mention the machine you'll be getting. Be sure to get a fully data-capable one, autotitrating if possible. This will give you the best chance to have the most effective therapy.

Thank you everyone for the input. At the sleep study they tried a few masks and I did the best with the nasal masks. They just didn't show me a lot of masks.

I never tried one, instead, I read this forum, most posts, and keep track of what's working for most people. Some people think chin straps are effective, but not all those people have the software to see if its fact or fooled. Many don't have good results with chin straps, jaw pain, still leaking, ECT. The real winner in chin straps, are the sellers. They win 100% of the time. Jim

Chinstraps do work for a lot of patients, I would be weary of taping your mouth closed, what would happen if you got some type of nasal block during the night. You might not wake up!!!!
