thirdnight on the hose

Post by sierra21 » Thu Jul 29, 2010 8:22 am

last night was my third night on the hose. it took me several hours to fall asleep. and i woke up several times. I didnt feel any leaks so i dont think that is why i woke up. The past three nights i have not took off the mask yet, i am sticking with it. i think it was just hard to get confertable. I havent felt too tired during the day and have a little more enrgy so i guess it is working. i wish i had the program to read the data on the card.

I got one question, when i wake up it feels like the machine is not on that there is no pressure but when i move the mask there is pressure. Is this normal?

I feel the same way. I'm wondering if it's because we are getting use to the pressure. I sure hope so.
I have been on therapy for 7 weeks and am still having trouble adjusting when I first go to bed, but like you I'm sticking with it, Dry mouth and all.

I definitely think it's just that you've gotten used to the pressure during the night and so you don't notice it when you wake in the morning.

Today marks week 2 that I have been on a CPAP with a nasal mask. Stick with it Sierra21. Soon you'll be putting your mask on and it won't feel completely alien and falling asleep will get easier.

My attitude is that if this thing gives me more energy, keeps my chances of strokes and heartattacks down and preserves what brain cells I have left then wearing the mask to bed and having air blown through my airway is completely worth it.

Maggie, Stick with it. If the machine has a ramp it can be set to bring the pressure up slowly say 1/2 hour or so. I know to that feeling of being out of sync with the machine. I think all machines have a mechanism to sense your breath effort; to make it easier. Resp. people can either instruct you how to adjust it or come to your house to re-adjust it. Hang tough. cos.

Jan, you don't have a data capable machine (too bad!) but if you are waking with a dry mouth it sounds like you are leaking from your mouth. You need to get that under control to get the best therapy possible. Unfortunately, you have no way to monitor your AHI so you will know what's happening because your machine won't tell you

Janknitz,Your right I do not have a data capable machine so I have to make do with what I have. I do wear a FFM because I have a deviated septum and have trouble breathing through my nose, therefore I'm a mouth breather. I have tried all kinds of Biotene products but NO luck. If it wans't for the dry mouth I think I could get use to this, but the dry mouth syndrome keeps waking me up in the middle of the night. I a also prone to kanker sores and this dry outh crap is not helping in anyway shape or form.

Jan, that is a terrible struggle you are going through, is there anything you can do about your deviated septum so you could breath better
for your cpap therapy?

The dry mouth indicates you may not be getting optimal pressure. You should contact your sleep doctor and let him know, especially if you are not feeling significantly better.

I really don't know how doctors expect to monitor the efficacy of the therapy they prescribe if they don't insist on data capable machines.

Went to the sleep doc Monday of last week. He upped my pressure from 11to 12. He did not say if this was due to my dry mouth.
I think some of my problem is the fact that I'm on high blood pressure meds, plus a couple of other meds. It's possible that they may be
contributing to my problem.
Thanks all for replying. Jan

If it's any consolation, my BP has come down A LOT on CPAP.

So watch your BP carefully in case the combination of meds and CPAP start bringing it too low. Keep in touch with your physician about this.

When I'm hosing up for the night, I kind of feel like I'm a character in a sci-fi.
Maybe one of these nights, I"ll have a really cool dream about it.
Dreaming for entertainment--not another explanation for suffocation.
