Hi Just a newbi in here and about to purchase a new machine. I have been diagnosed with chronic sleep apnea and also arithmic sleep apnea and I was told by the university sleep disorders program that I require a Bipap machine and that the best choice for me is the $5000 plus Respironics Bipap auto sv.
I checked online and found a Respironics auto sv Advanced machine and my question to the forum is : Is there any advantage to seeking out the Advanced model??
Any feedback on this comparison of models would be appreciated.

I haven't figured out how to post the comparison challenge yet...
Re: Bipap auto sv vs Bipap auto sv advanced Respironics
The std model is fine. What the advanced model offers is OSA monitoring.
To put it as simply as possible ...
Advanced model offers (optional activation) two different algorithms that address different aspects of SDB (Sleep disordered breathing).
1) Is that it now addresses OSA by using the Respironics OSA algorithm to monitor obstructive apneas so the base (epap) pressure can be
regulated to try to keep OSA events under control.
2) Is the SV algorithm. This is the one that tracks Average Peak Flow and if within a 4 minute window, in any 1 breath, it determines you
will not reach the Av Peak Flow target it has calculated, it can *instantly* (within that 1 breath) raise pressure by up to 3 CMs to try to get
you on target. It can repeat that for 3 breaths in a row (which can equate to a pressure rise of approx 10 CMs in 3 breaths if the machine
was configured to allow that much).
So, 1 takes care of OSA events & 2 takes care of periodic breathing & centrals. But, as you will know, the centrals it addresses need to
be recognized as serious centrals that would be causing you oxygenation problems (many centrals for normal people, are quite benign).
But, if you don't have severe OSA, then the OSA algorithm (#1 above) may really add little value to your therapy. Your doc will be able to
advise you re this.
Hope this helps

Re: Bipap auto sv vs Bipap auto sv advanced Respironics
Perhaps another way to explain the difference is that the BiPAP AutoSV is a BiPAP unit that adds the Adaptive Servo-Ventilation mode to the unit.
The BiPAP AutoSV Advanced model is like a Auto BiPAP that adds the Adaptive Servo-Ventilation mode to the unit.
So, the Advanced unit will adjust your pressure demands up and down to address the obstructive sleep apnea. If you are not obstructing, it will drop the inspiration/expiration pressure as needed. If your obstructions kick in, it will increase the pressure to resolve the obstruction.
Hope that helps.
