Anyone else experience trouble with Vantage?

Post by yorkiemum01 » Thu Jul 01, 2010 3:47 am

Have had my unit nearly 2 years, with never a hiccup. These last few nights its like it has a
mind of its own. In the middle of the night the unit will stop, check mask fitting, re-ramp, stop
again and repeat......what the heck?? Its been enough disruption to wake me and remove my mask &
If it happened only once, I'd probably dismiss it as a fluke. Any thoughts??

NEARLY two years is THE KEY word here. That Vantage has a TWO YEAR warranty. Don't even think about it. Get that Vantage in to your local DME provider NOW - ASAP. Whilst it is still under warranty. Let Resmed figure it out. Meanwhile, you get a new APAP. Don't let your local DME provider give you any B.S. It is under warranty and they are supposed to handle it. Also go to

http://www.myresmed.com

and register if you haven't already. Then use their Contact Us link to contact them, explain what your Vantage is doing, and list your local DME provider and address. Resmed will tell you to take your Vantage to your provider - but THEY will also contact your provider. So your provider shouldn't be able to wiggle out of handling the warranty and if they do, Resmed will see to it that the warranty is handled properly.

And it may be that your provider will just handle the warranty w/o blinking an eye and maybe even w/a smile on their face.

(Also, a replacement refurbished unit starts the 2 year warranty over, so you have 2 more years.) I had a problem with a unit stopping at night and starting back up with my doing nothing to cause or start it back. I later replaced the breaker to this outlet and it seems to have fixed the problem, after about 4 different machines did the same thing.

Ahhh...the unit is 3 yrs old, and I purchased it outright, so dont have an DME I use.
Contacting Resmed isn't a bad idea though...no harm in trying.

They will still repair or replace it with a refurbished. Only difference is they will charge you a fee. I don't know how much that will amount to. You could ask whomever you purchased it from to begin with or for that matter, any dealer could probably tell you. You normally get a faster and better response from where you purchased it. Stopping and starting is no good and makes it difficult in using the machine at all. I use a Respironics Bipap M series auto. However, all the warranties are the same. It's best to have a supplier return it, not sure if they would accept it from an individual. You can ask and see. Luck

According to the serial number it was manufactuered 2006. Shows its been in use 3407 hours...wonder what a lifespan is for these units. Have emailed Resmed, but certain they'll tell me its beyond warranty.

The warranty begins on the machines when they leave the dock of the manufacturer. The hours of use really have nothing to do with it. If you were not in compliance it would have fewer hours than if you used it every night for 8 hours or so. In theory, when it leaves the manufacturer to the dealer it could sit on their shelf for 30 days or more. Most have a return period of up to 30 days. Hence a machine could be out of the 30 day return warranty when you get it from a dealer. However, the two years begins when it leaves the manufacturer's dock. I once had an email from Respironics to that affect. I believe generally if it is close to within the 2 year warranty they make it good for the dealer because of the shelf issue. Maybe up to 2 years and a month. It does appear yours is out of warranty going back to 2006. That's over 4 years. I believe they have a set amount for refurbished and repairs. Probably cheaper than a new machine.

At 8 hours a night, 3407 is only slightly over a years full time use...I would suspect that 15,000+ hours would be average.

Sorry, but this isn't correct. Under Federal law (the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 - 15 U.S.C. § 2301 - and various FTC regulations relating to it), if coverage begins at some point in time other than the purchase date, the warranty must 'explicitly and conspicuously' state the time or event that begins the coverage. Absent such language, the warranty period begins at the time of first sale to the consumer. If STHNREB's contention were true, no one would ever get the full stated time of warranty. They would literally have to be standing at the manufacturer's shipping dock to receive the full length of coverage. Note that a manufacturer COULD specify a different starting date and still be legal, but would have to explicitly state that in the warranty itself. To my knowledge, no such language exists in currently available CPAP maker's warranties. It certainly does not in my copy of the warranty on my S-8 Vantage.

Perhaps people should read a complete statement on the forum and not just segments? If you would note, I went on to say that they normally would extend it as a courtesy for any shelf time (normally less than 2 weeks). Regardless of any law you state, Respironics (and cpap.com) told me the warranty starts when it is shipped from the dock of Respironics. I assume they don't overstock and may not even order from Respironics until an order is placed. I'm sure they don't have an abundance of stock on hand. I am aware because I had a machine that proved to be bad in the first 15 days. I emailed and was told to tru different things to make it run properly. I eventually asked for a replacement and all offered was a refurbished because it was past the 30 day return limit after I tried all their experiments to get it working right. I told them I notified them within 30 days of a problem. They went on to explain the warranty and when it began to me. I was told they would furnish a refurbished or repair mine. I opted for repair of mine, which never happened. The Federal Law says foreign immigrants are illegal too, but what difference does that make? And that is Federal Law! Mine is experience and what was relayed to me from a manufacturer and a dealer. Quote your law but until it happens to you, don't insinuate I lied.

I followed up and took the liberty to look up the warranty in the back of my manual. It states:
LIMITED WARRANTY
"Respironics, Inc. warrants that the system shall be free from defects of workmanship and materials and will perform in accordance with the product specifications for a period of two (2) years from the date of sale by Respironics, Inc. to the dealer. (Not the end user) If the product fails to perform in accordance with the product specifications, Respironics, Inc. will repair or replace - at it's option - the defective material or part. Respironics, Inc. will pay customary freight charges from Respironics Inc. to the dealer location only. This warranty does not cover damage caused by accident, misuse, abuse, alterations and other defects not related to materian or workmanship."

Therefore, the statement I made was in fact the truth. Please also read your warranty. Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 must be squirlley too or non-existant. If a dealer shelfs the machine, it is part of the warranty. The warranty begins as stated, when it leaves the manufacturers dock.

And I took the liberty to look up the warranty in the back of my Resmed VPAP Auto manual. It states:

LIMITED WARRANTY
Resmed warrants that your ResMed product shall be free from defects in material and workmanship for the period specified below from the date of purchase by the initial consumer. This warranty is not transferrable.

ResMed flow generators - Warranty Period 2 years

... Warranty is void on product sold, or resold, outside the region of original purchase. Warranty claims on defective product must be made by the initial consumer at the point of purchase.

... Some regions or states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitation may not applyto you.

... This warranty give you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from region to region.

It certainly seems to me that Resmed offers the better, more reasonable and fair, warranty. A h*lll of a whole lot better than Respironics "from the date of sale by Respironics, Inc. to the dealer".

Based on warranty alone I'd be inclined to go w/a Resmed.

I don't have a Resmed machine so therefore I am really not aware of what it says. I do have a couple of Respironics and because of difficulties with them became personally aware of their warranty. Really, everyone purchasing either of the machines should be well aware of what the warranties states, when they begin and when they end and what they cover. It's not like they are cheap, just maybe built cheap. If I make it 4 more years, perhaps I will opt for a Resmed machine. Medicare only allows a machine every 5 years unless you want to pay for it out of pocket. Which you almost do anyway. Resmed raised their prices before Respironics and I guess that is why I stayed with them. I will pay about $615 for the M series Bipap Auto machine out-of-pocket through Medicare which I could have purchased on the Internet for $969 as it was being discontinued. So, I saved about $360. One dealer said it was no longer being manufactured and was to be discontinued while others were saying it wasn't discontinued. Even Respironics told me they were still manufacturing them. A month or so later you could no longer purchase one, only parts or the PR One. Anyway, warranties are settled and I am out of here. Hugs, hugs, hugs Yorkiemum01.....I only have 5 toy poodles left......
