respironics m series plus cflex

Post by JanisB » Tue Jun 29, 2010 7:57 pm

Please help!

My husband has a Respironics M series Plus Cflex cpap machine with the humidifier and
he hates it! The motor cuts in and out as he breaths, like an engine changing gears, and it
keeps him awake. We have turned off the cflex and still the motor goes in and out. The
air pressure seems to remain steady. Has anyone else had this problem with this machine?
Also, can you recommend a cpap machine that is quiet, has a humidifier, and has a motor that
does not cut in and out?

Thanks

How old is it? If less than 2 yrs., it's still under warranty. If he got it at a local DME, has he approached them about getting it fixed?

Does he have his prescription? (physical document)
Would this be through insurance or out-of-pocket?

It is less than a year old and has been doing this from day 1 since it was brand new.
Since our insurance would not cover it, we bought it ourselves.

From whom? An individual or online seller or......?
It may still be under warranty and may still be able to get factory service.

You might also contact this place. They do factory authorized (and maybe warranty) work on Respironics machines and may be able to give you some guidance as to the nature of the problem and what may be involved fixing it.

There are lots of slightly used and new machines available these days (on CPAPAUCTION).......many of them are fully data-capable (which that "Plus" is not) and relatively inexpensive.

I have the same machine for when I travel and it "whines" like that. The company just told me that the sound was normal. Arrgggh!
P.S. I also hate the blue lights!

When you breath in and out, the load on the motor changes pitch as the power needed changes. That's normal for most things. You need something that makes more noise, to mask the XPAP noise. A fan running, A/C, nature music or white noise generator ECT. You have to have something else to fix your mind on rather than laying there listening to your breathing. Jim

We bought it online from a company we have done a lot of business with in the past. It was a
new machine.
This is his 3rd cpap machine. He did not have this problem with his other machines, his last one being
a respironics model that this model replaced. He's been using a cpap for over 15 years.

I'm wondering how many others have had this same experience with this model?
It is interesting that a previous poster reports a similar problem.
Are there others who have noticed this with this model?

We have tried white noise with no luck.

What kind of machine do you use when you are not traveling?

As I mentioned in another poste, the DME picked up my machine (same as yours) today because of a different problem. The person who picked it up tried it out to see what was up and he mentioned something like you have said (I guess I got used to it over the last two years).

The replacement unit was much quieter--- he said to me, "That is how it is supposed to sound". Hopefully they can diagnose it along with the other problem.

Sorry they have not been more supportive to you-- for me the good news is that I am a little hard of hearing and putting it on a shelf a few inches off the floor muffles the sound just enough that it doesn't bother me or my wife.

I would still contact the dealer for their input

I've owned a Remstar Auto with C-flex since 2006. It became my travel machine when I got bought my ResMed S9 recently. The machine has alway made the same noises you are talking about. It took a while but I got used to it.

I have an m series aflex, used it for three years. It was not super quiet, and made a slightly annoying wheeze to the rhythm of my breathing. To mask that noise, I always sleep with a machine that pays sound effects, the sound I use is a constant sound of rain.

Those of you that have an iPhone or ipod touch, you can get an inexpensive app called ambiance that plays sound effects, there are hundreds to choose from. We dock our ipod touch in a small ipod speaker dock ($100, but there are many models for less), and that's our noise machine. Works great, plus we can use it as a stereo during the day.

I have this same model CPAP and it does make different noise on inhale/exhale. I don't use Cflex, and that made it much better, plus I sleep with a ceiling fan whirring overhead, so it just does not bother me. Some people are more sensitive to sounds than others though, especially certain pitches. Do make sure your hose is not leaking and that you are not leaking air at the humidifier tank. The seal on my tank started leaking and it did make the sounds worse.

Mine has a 2 year warranty, so you may be able to check it out with the manufacturer to be sure it is not an actual malfunction.
