Deviated Septum Stories

Post by sleepmba » Tue Jun 22, 2010 2:49 am

I'm looking to hear from any of you xPAP users who have a deviated septum. Have you had corrective surgery? Any noticable difference after surgery? Any mask difficulties because of it? I figured some people will find some of these stories helpful. I just wrote a little about this in my blog too. Thanks in advance for your commentaries.

*raises hand* All the way back as long as I could remember I could never breathe through my right nostril (and not too well through the left either). I've always had really bad allergies so chalked it up to that. For example, I found out just two years ago that I'm severely allergic to cats. We always had at least one and sometimes up to four cats in the house when we were kids.

Anyway, a few years ago I met with an ENT prior to having a uppp done. He took one look up my nose and said, "has anyone ever told you that you have a severely deviated septum?". Uhhh, no.

So I had the septoplasty done at the same time as the uppp. When the splint came out and I took my first breath I was shocked at how much air I was able to get through my nose.

I've gone from a full face mask to a nasal mask (tried and didn't like nasal pillows because they were too loud).

YES I had the surgery and it has made a huge differance in my sleep, I too went from a full mask to pillows, no more stuffy nose or headaches,

I had my nose flattened when I was younger (long story) and had it "fixed" when I was about 20 (26 years ago). It still angles off to the right a fair bit and I was concerned about whether I'd get adequate air flow or not.

It seems to work OK for me with the nasal pillows - I think that they inflate the nose as well improving air-flow but that could just be my imagination.

septoplasty and turbinate reduction about 3 months ago. Not painful, just a long awkward recovery. But very well worth it as i have not had any congestion since

I had deviated septum repair and polyps removed 5 weeks ago...2 hr surgery. The worst part was my doctor's instructions to not use my CPAP for 7 days. Th had no pain and aside from bleeding the first day, no problems.

I have a moderate deviated septum and rhinitis allergic. I have an appointment with a surgeon Dr. to see if he thinks I need a surgery. I really don't know if I want to have a surgery after hearing all the suffering after surgery. Do I need it if my septum is on that condition? I'm wondering if that will do something. How do you do to sleep after surgery, how do you use your cpap with the nose full of whatever?

My turbinates where cauterized 30 years ago and I have had problem with stuffy nose for ever. Suggestions, ideas, comments?
Thanks
