I went to my appointment today to get information/order a replacement cPAP machine. To my surprise I was told that there are no options – my health insurance company decided which machine I was going to receive and how it was to be set up.
I now have a Respironics REMstar Auto A-Flex machine and a System One Heated Humidifier. The machine is setup to be used as a cPAP, but from what I have been able to find out on-line this machine can also be used as an Auto cPAP.
Does anyone have information on the steps necessary to change it to an Auto cPAP?

Yes, your new machine will run in auto mode. I don't have that model, so I can't advise how to set it up, but somebody will be along here shortly to guide you through it. Did you try searching for a thread about it?

I did search and found the thread that tells me how to get into the "clinical menu" but I don't know what to do beyond that - I was hoping someone here would be able to hold my hand and walk me through the steps.brazospearl wrote:Yes, your new machine will run in auto mode. Thanks for your response.

I don't know if it's just me, but I find your post very confusing. Did they just give you that machine todey? Have you previously been using CPAP for any length of time. Have you had a data-capable machine and the software to monitor your therapy before?almarsh wrote:I went to my appointment today to get information/order a replacement cPAP machine. Why do you feel it necessary to change the machine to APAP mode?
Do you have the Encore Viewer software?

If you do not have the appropriate software to monitor your therapy (even for CPAP mode), it would really be an exercise in frustration (and futility) to switch your machine to APAP mode.
First you should find out how your present CPAP pressure setting is working for you. Then, depending on the results, you would need to decide WHY and TO WHAT you would need to change the pressure.

I received a new machine because the one I was using was over five years old, it became very noisy, it could no longer be repairedHave you previously been using CPAP for any length of time. Why do you feel it necessary to change the machine to APAP mode? One of my issues is feeling like I can't catch my breath when I sleep on my side (deviated septum) - another is having the same feeling when I have a cold/stuffy nose - the neurologist(no I can not change Dr's due to insurance issues) I see does not believe in Auto cPAP equipment because of the cost
Do you have the Encore Viewer software?not yet - it is on order

Re: changing machine from cPAP to Auto cPAP
Glad to hear it's on order.
A pressure that's too low or humidity settings that are too high can cause those "can't catch my breath" feelings. With an APAP, if the minimum setting is too low, you would also have those feelings. To optimize an APAP, the minimum pressure needs to be set where it takes care of almost all of the events.
I don't know what mask you're using, but if it's a nasal mask, be vigilant to eliminate mouth-leaking or mouth-breathing.

Re: changing machine from cPAP to Auto cPAP
You have a good machine. I will look for an electronic copy of the clinical manual and send it to you. Its pretty easy to use that machine.
