Newbie @3 weeks: When will my lungs/back stop aching?

Post by ursine1 » Tue Jun 08, 2010 2:59 pm

Newbie here: Three weeks into using an S9 Autoset with Swift FX pillows; pressure setting on 9 to 12. My nightly AHI's are below 1.0 and the leak rate is very low so I'm thinking my therapy is working (I'm a Mac guy on an older, non-Intel machine, so for now I can't run the Resmed software to get more detailed info.) The only real issue I'm having is that I wake up with pretty bad aching in my upper back. At first I thought it might be stiffness from not moving around at night like I used to do before therapy... but then I noticed it's related to my lungs -- If I breath in deeply after waking I can feel the ache. It seems to go away after a couple of hours... but I find I'm often taking tylenol upon waking; the pain is that bothersome. Does this mean my pressure might be too high? Or is this something that will (hopefully!) go away on it's own? Advice?

My lungs ached for awhile when I first started therapy. It did eventually go away. I don't think it means your pressure is too high but think that your lungs need to get use to the extra air pressure.

I also had the same problem with a ache in my back first thing in the am after getting out of bed,but it did go away.I think the lungs are just not used to being filled right up with the pressurized air. But hang in there it will get better.

Most everyone experiences the growing pains. It takes a while for your body to adapt ... some a little longer. We are all different ... be patient it WILL go away.

I only had a sore chest just the first few days of using the APAP...but my settings are pretty low I guess at between 6-16cm with my average at 9.5cm at the moment... where some other people would start at 9cm...

I think it lasted a couple weeks or so for me, very uncomfortable.. but now, month four, no more back or lung pain..

It will pass, hang in there..

Yeah i went through that odd feeling for the 1st two weeks or so. It should pass.

Congrats on the good therapy numbers. You sound like you are doing well. It took me a good three weeks just to get used to sleeping with all of the gear on.
