Suspiciously good results with new S9

Hello all,

I've now been on CPAP for four months, previously with a Resmed S8 and for the last four nights, a S9.

I think there was discussion on this topic before, but I'm finding suspiciously good readings from the data.

Before: average AHI 6.0
Before: average usage 3.75 hrs

Now: average AHI 2.7
Now: average usage 6.25 hrs.

Is the machine fooling with me or is this something that you've also encountered?

It's difficult for me to believe that the results could be so good so quickly.
The slimmer hose may have a direct influence on the data methinks.

The S8 tends to over reports hypo's and would drive up your AHI. I believe I read that you can cut the hypoapnea index in half on the S8. My S8 was not data capable so I have no clue how many hypo's it was scoring. With the S9 I rarely see hypo's and when I do see them it's only one or two all night long. Perhaps that explains part of the difference you are seeing.

The S8 may have very well over reported hypopneas which drove up the AHI.
I don't feel much different except that compliance per night has increased with the new S9.

My hypopneas were immediately reduced when I switched from a Remstar Auto to the S9. I wonder if the S9 under reports hypopneas?

I think that the S9's reporting has been discussed in a previous thread(s). I couldn't find the HI in my machine's data report. It seems to only report CAI and AHI.

IIRC, the DevilBiss Intellipap aPAP machine lets you change the definition of an apnea and a hypopnea. For instance, you can set the threshold for a hypopnea to a reduction of 30% of your airflow (v. the default of 50%). I'll have to look later at what the settings allow. I wonder if the S9 clinical menu allows this, too, and if so, what its default values are?

I haven't gone deeply into the clinician's menu on the machine yet, or know if it's even possible to change the thresholds.

I'm on day five of the new machine and like it so far. My sleep time and usage has been steady at 6 + hours, whereas previously it varied from 2 - 7 hours, mostly at the four hour mark. This alone is worth the co$t of the unit.

Since I run a Mac, I can't obtain software to look at my data in detail. Apparently it's only available for PC users.
