New Bipap machine

Post by jopo3588 » Fri May 21, 2010 11:40 am

I am planning to get a new Bipap. Has anyone tried the new PR System One REMstar BiPAP Auto with Bi-Flex and if so, can you share your experience with it? Does anyone have a recommendation based on their experience for a new Bipap machine? Thanks!

My general recommendation:

As for the S1 BPAP you mention, I've never used it myself--but Slinky likes it, and that's good enough recommendation for me:

Yup, I have a PR SystemOne BPAP Auto w/Bi-Flex on loan. Its a honey. While we haven't found my needed pressure yet w/it, it isn't the S1's fault. It took a couple of weeks to get the software and then, being used to Resmed's ResScan which documents on each data printout the pressure settings, I didn't make note of pressure changes I made. So, I had only "guess-timates" of the pressure settings w/the best data and kind of had to start all over again. None of that can be blamed on the S1!!

I'm getting every bit as good therapy w/this S1 as I did w/my beloved Resmed VPAP Auto. The extra data on the Central Apneas is nice. I'm not so sure about the data on Periodic Breathing and Vibratory Snore as they are totally new to me. The Respiratory Effort data is particularly interesting to me. I LOVE that you can turn off the Auto Start and Auto Stop. You can't w/the VPAP Auto and I HATE that dang automatic start!!!! I LOVE that you can just pull the data card and insert it into an inexpensive generic electronics store "card reader". I think I like the S1's Pressure Support method better than my VPAP Auto's.

I HATE EncorePro 2.2 Installation was a b*tch. Learning to use it is a PITA. I miss my ResScan graphs that I could manipulate time periods with. I dislike the dots or slashes or whatever that EP uses, all of those printouts are .... pretty much ignored by me. I do still like the Daily Events Per Hour table.

I wish I could take the S1 features that I like and meld them w/the S8 features that I like, the extra data from the S1 that I like w/the ResScan method of displaying data .... ah well, if wishers were horses .....

I'm not particularly enamoured of the S1's nearly impossible to leak integrated humidifier tank. I'm not one to empty my tank every day. I usually just keep topping it off w/distilled water. W/my S8 I just pop the lid in the morning, let the S8 "do its thing" for as long as it deems fit and never worry about humidity in the S8 PAP itself. NOT a good idea to continue that habit w/the S1 integrated humidifier. I can see me drastically shortening the S1's working life if I were to continue that habit w/the S1 as the humidity remains despite popping the lid due to the leak proof design. Of course, this is no problem for those scrupulous about cleaning their equipment. And its not like it is a difficult thing to remove the tank. Its just a matter of breaking a 3 year habit.

I don't think you can go wrong getting a PR SystemOne BPAP Auto w/Bi-Flex.

I've had the Resmed S8 Vpap Auto 25 for a little over 6 weeks now, and have been very happy with it.
It's a very quiet machine, and the transition from IP to EP feels like normal breathing. During my sleep study, they used a Respironics machine, and the IP felt like an air cannon blasting me in the face. It literally blew the mask away from my face. It was because of that, that I went with the Resmed, and haven't regretted it since.
