New hosehead

Post by topdragster » Thu May 20, 2010 2:58 am

Hi EB just wanted to say thanks for all the info I have gotten from this site since I have found it,special thanks to uncle_bob too:). There are a lot of great contributors here, which has helped me immensely. I recently decided to give cpap a try for my snoring problems that have plauged me for years. I'm still on a trial (2weeks) now and must say it is different, but I'm getting used to it. My daughter says I look like hannibal lecter with my nasal mask on but I don't hear her complaining about my snoring anymore. My wife is truly amazed at how quiet I sleep now and she is no longer worried about me stopping breathing as I did without cpap. Finally off the couch after 10 years lol. I have been given a M Series Auto CPAP with A-Flex for the trial but hear both Philips Respironics and Resmed have new units out. I have been looking at the s9 with the h5i. Can't believe the price differnce from cpap.com and the dme in my town in canada. Cpap.com is less than half of what it would cost me here at home. Anyone care to comment on the pros and cons of the two new cpaps from Respironics and Resmed. What are the cons of ordering direct from cpap.com, ie:warranty claims etc? I am not new to forums just to cpap but as I grow with it I hope to contribute back to the cpap commmunity.

Brian

Hi, Brian! My husband and I just started our CPAP therapy this past Friday so I don't have a lot of experience, but I can at least comment on the ResMed S9 machine with the h5i, which is what we have. Of course, keep in mind we don't have anything else to compare it to, but we love the machines. We don't use the software, so I can't speak to the information you get from the machine, but they're very quiet--the first couple of nights we kept checking to make sure they were even still on--and are easy enough to operate. I don't love the shorter hose that comes with it; I kept getting tangled up in it the first couple of nights because I'm a restless sleeper and managed to pull the machines off the night stand twice, but I just switched to nasal pillows from a nasal mask yesterday, and the additional length of hose that comes with my Swift FX headgear seems to help. The humidifier is very easy to fill, drain, and clean each day, and held up well through its nighttime crashes. And they seem to work well for us, since we're both getting good sleep most of the night (his machine is set at 8, mine at 7 if that's important to know). We like the ramp-up feature and it has a great mask-fitting feature that makes it visually easy to know if you've got a good seal on your mask. Plus the machines look nice on the bedside--like a cool clock radio. Which, in the scheme of things, isn't that important, but since I was afraid we'd look like a sleep lab, it was a nice bonus. So from our household, the S9/h5i combo gets two thumbs up!

Hi Brian and welcome to the club. I don't think you can go wrong with the S9, I was looking at the system one also but was concerned about the FOT pulse or "puff of air", people were claiming it was disturbing their sleep.

If you buy from cpap.com then you will have to submit the claim to your insurance yourself. First check that your insurance allows you to purchase on line. cpap.com will send you paperwork with your order containing the relevant billing codes that you can send in with your claim.

I have been using my PR System One for around two months now. Yes it was kind of weird at the beginning the pressure pulses, but after one week I stopped noticing it.

When I analyze the graphs I can see some times I stop breathing or my breathing becomes very very shallow, then I see a pulse and I start breathing normally again. All that without increasing pressure what I like, I don't notice it, it keeps me at lower pressure and I have no aerophagia and I wake up rested.

I have no problem at all with my hose (no holes whatsoever), no need to buy a permanent water reservoir after a couple of months for the humidifier, I have no rain out, the machine is not noisy and the price is not exaggerated.

The only thing I like less (I like better Resmed software, I have a S8 autoset)) is the software, but I can accept it. If somebody offered me to exchange my System One against his/her S9 I would say no thanks.

Sorry S9 lovers

aha! there is something positive about the pr system one pressure pulses!

so, thats it! it sends the little puffs of air when you dont take a breath on time to give you a little umpf.. a little nudge to get going.

BEFORE it ramps up the pressure.. this feature doesnt bother most people, but if you are an insomniac and it happens while you
are awake, you might fid it annoying.. also if you are a shallow breather, you will set it off, or if you forget to inhale a lot when awake..

If youre not any of those things, the pressure pulses should not bother you at all. IF you go to sleep easily, it might be an asset.

i have had both machines... I think my system one had a defect which made it have a little high tone.. other than that, I loved it, save
for no info of ahi on the screen in the morning, and s9 auto has that feature along with the climate hose, that is extra.

IF I can get my s9 to work like my pr system one a flex, I will be a happy camper!
