Help---my eyes are so swollen

Post by nanwilson » Tue May 18, 2010 7:37 am

Help...my eyes are so swollen...
My eyes have been progressively getting more swollen every day. To try and stop the air from blowing into my eyes, I have made a few remzzzs with larger than normal area over the eyes. but the air is still hitting me. Any suggestions..... my granddaughter even offered to lend me her swim goggles . I do have allergies, but I am taking antihistime, I am also using eye drops, but nothing helps.
Nan
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

You may have the wrong size Quattro. If it is too large it will not seal at the top of the nose. Read the instructions that came with the mask carefully. Quattro tends to run large.

Air leaks into the eyes is not good. If you can't adjust your mask so it doesn't leak into your eyes, go back to your DME and get a mask fitting and/or another mask. Make sure you try it on lying down in your usual sleeping position, with the cpap on to your usual setting.

Some people do wear swim goggles--so your granddaughter is a smart girl. But I would rather address the leaks. Here's a link to some research I did in Feb:

My eyes started getting puffy as soon as I started the cpap machine. Changed to a smaller mask. Pretty sure not leaking into my eyes, but still puffy just the same. Guess it goes with the mask marks on my face and just another part of my character. However, I did sleep almost 6 hours straight last night, finally, so I'm not complaining too much. Still if anyone knows a remedy for the puffy eyes, I would certainly check into it!

There are 2 possible issues - it is still leaking when it gets moved while you sleep or the leak is internal up the tear ducts. (they connect to your nasal passage which is why your nose runs when you cry.) To have that dealt with you need to see an ophthalmologists who knows about cpap therapy.
I found that after i switched to the Hybrid mask it was much better but I was getting red eyes not puffy eyes.

I recently changed to a Hybrid type mask (the Mirage Liberty) and also found that using nasal pillows was a surprising, major improvement (over the different type full face mask I'd used previously) on several levels. It certainly helped the baggy eyes which were making me depressed everytime I looked in the mirror. No more pressure around my sinuses and eyes and it doesn't stretch my skin under my eyes, either. I also find that the air blowing directly into my nose helps my nasal congestion. Every face is different. I had no bed to lie down on for trial at DME but tried to lay on my side in a chair to see how it sealed.
