I like that mask! I think it might work for me!

Post by jlgwinn » Sun May 16, 2010 6:54 pm

Just a thought here…How about a section with pictures of people with their most used mask on. In a way, this might help others select a mask matching their face up with others. I would say take a portrait from the front with out mask on, side view, then with the mask you use on. In the body, state what mask it is, alterations to the mask, and if you use humidity. This way, people can compare facial characteristics, facial hair, etc... Just a thought...What do you think? Sound cheesy?

I think that's a great idea, Jeff, for anyone who feels comfortable doing that. Not me, though.

There must be particular masks that do work better with various facial features and characteristics -- chubby or thin face/cheeks, round or long face, different nasal shapes and sizes, recessed or more pronounced chin, upper lip or tooth issues, etc. If anyone wants to do this, it may help to also mention the mask/nasal pillows size that works best for them.

Although I won't be posting photos of myself, I can share that my face is long and thin with an average-sized nose. I have a more pronounced upper lip (overbite). Masks that have not worked for me are...well...most masks, including Quattro, FullLife, FlexiFit 431, Swift 2, Swift LT, Swift LT for Her, ComfortLite 2, OptiLife, Liberty, ComfortFull, and ComfortGel full face & nasal. I tried on multiple sizes of each of those.

Masks that have worked for me are AEIOMed Headrest (large pillows), F & P Opus 360 (large pillows), small ResMed Activa LT (seal is excellent, but can't wear often due to pressure on upper lip/teeth), and InnoMed Hybrid (med. pillows + med. mouth cushion -- sometimes it leaks, sometimes it's okay).

As someone said in another post here re mask fitting, it's not so much about the facial shape, but the very individual (and tiny differences) measurements between your chin, nose, cheekbones, etc., in various combos. Looking superficially like someone else is unlikely to help that much.

Well, what would be really nice is if we could modify the facial recognition software out there and match it to mask designs and sizes..

Gee, they have those dr scholl computers in stores which read your feet then pick out an orthodic..

It would great before your sleep study if you could have your face scanned by a facial recognition computer, and BING..
five of the best mask matches pop up and you try them..

Here's a guy who's come up with a method to do this using a single webcam and some home-grown software. He's getting a PhD out of it.
Image
The video shows a 3-d model being constructed on the fly just by manually turning a physical model around in slowly in space with his hands. It's still in its infancy, but something like this could easily be adapted to scan faces at a DME - or at home. The file could be compared with known mask-fit variables to come up with the mask that best fits the person being scanned.
