I did it again...

Post by janeysmom » Sat May 15, 2010 6:13 am

Last night, for the second or third time in 4 months, I removed my mask and placed it on top of my machine in the middle of the night. And I do not remember doing it! And I come to wake up and see it there. Has anyone else done this? I wonder why we do this. Other than that my CPAP therapy is going really well. Good AHI and other numbers and I am dreaming again. Just kind of random..

I have also had this happen twice since starting cpap. I asked and everybody said it is pretty normal and it happens. I never remember how or why I took my mask off.

Although I have never take off my mask while sleeping I noticed my body or brain doesn't want to go to bed. Each night I have a hard time going to bed, I need to be really tired to be able to finally decide to go to try to fall asleep.

I imagine our body knows we are putting on our face something that is not a normal to it and reacts in weird and special ways as taking the mask of and putting it on top of your machine, at least you put your mask in a secure place That would be a disaster if we start destroying our mask in our sleep

When I get up at night to use the bathroom, I disconnect the hose but leave my mask in place. On several occasions I have returned to bed and neglected to re-connect the hose. I'm surprised when I get up in the AM without a connection.

I did this the night before last. I woke up in the middle of the night and my machine was off and my mask was laying on the pillow above my head. It's the first time I took it off in my sleep and didn't remember doing it. It was apnea that woke me up enough to realize I wasn't wearing my mask. Thankfully when I looked at the data my machine was only off for about 30 minutes.

I think it's fairly normal to have this happen from time to time. It sure is strange to have taken it off and shut the machine off and have not memory of it. Kinda makes me wonder what else I do in my sleep.

Consider yourself fortunate that it doesn't happen every night. I read a thread not to long ago about a poor soul that was having to tie himself to the bed because he wouldn't stop shutting his machine off in his sleep and had tried everything he could think of to quit doing so.
