gastric distention and vomiting

Post by agavegrove » Mon May 10, 2010 8:49 am

Went to bed with my mask on. I took it off as is the usual habit, about 30 minutes later. I woke up again about 1:30, put it on, and went to bed. I woke up an hour later feeling strange. I pulled the mask off and sat up. I noticed I had a lot - I mean *a lot* of air in my abdomen. I couldn't tell if it was in the stomach or intestinal but it hurt. I felt like a balloon. I burped and passed some of it but then got really nauseous and started vomiting. I had to vomit in an essentially upright position to get the air to the top. Once I was done I felt less distended. The remaining distention improved overnight. My wife did point out I was snoring as if without the mask when I had the mask on earlier.

Has anyone else experienced this? This is a first for me and I've been in therapy a year. Looking forward to hearing your feedback.

Hi, did you recently raise your pressure? That can lead to aerophagia (swallowing air), but the nausea is not usually a factor, so I wonder if you inadvertently covered the CO2 vent with bedding as that can cause big problems. It is so important to be sure it's kept clear.

I didn't change the pressure settings. The only bedding I used was a sheet and it was only half covering me. I often have problems with the mask sitting right. Sometimes it's loose, sometimes it's so tight it hurts. I also realized I am using a different pillow. I didn't use the mask last night and woke up easily this morning. I'll try again tonight and see what happens.

Interesting to me to hear this. I have experienced this, first when my pressure was raised to 14, I had a couple of nights when I woke up in the mornng so nauseous that I felt I was going to vomit, but didn't. My pressure was lowered to 12 and that all went away. Then, just a few nights ago, I woke up at 3am with so much air in my stomach I was positive I would throw up, got up, drank a little 7Up to get some burps out and went back to sleep. Back up at 6am with real pain again and did throw up. Hasnt happened since and that has been the only occurence at this pressure so I am chalking it up to a rotten night for reasons unbeknowst to me for the time being. I dont know what to tell you, but again, it was interesting to me to see that someone else has experienced this. NOT a good feeling. Hope you can get this solved.

I have experienced the gastric distension, and it is no fun. Things that helped me: EPR (exhale relief), lower pressure (just 1 cm made a difference), eating a light dinner, no food 2-3 hours before bed, and Gas X.

Could it be a combination of gas + something you ate? Hope this resolves for you.
