How can I turn on the epr on the s9 elite?

Post by jta » Fri May 07, 2010 2:35 am

My dme pt will be delivering the resmed s9 elite with epr on Monday. I really wanted the s9 auto cpap but was told the dr. doesn't believe in it and also doesn't believe in the epr and the machine will not be set with the epr on. If I feel that it's needed would like to know if I can turn it on. I read somewhere on the forum that we can change the settings ,etc on some of the machines. Also, is there software that can be ordered for this particular model. Thanks in advance.

USUALLY, the comfort features can be enabled and adjusted by the patient. The details will be in the manual you get with the machine.

The OSA patient died quietly in his sleep.
Unlike his passengers who died screaming as the car went over the cliff...

When I got my S9 I ask the RT to set it up with access to the EPR and data on the screen. She did not set it up that, as soon as she left I was in the clinician's menu setting up the I wanted it. It can be locked out so that you can't see it in the regular menu, but with a little know how you can fix it.

I'm sending you a PM with a link to the clinician's manual and the software.

I would also be looking of another Dr. that
cared more about his patients.....than himself.

I said that.

What's not to believe in? The S9 AutoSet as a product does exist and so does the EPR feature--I can prove it as I have an S9 and have seen the EPR feature.

In all seriousness, EPR can have a negative impact on AHI for some people--the RT at my sleep clinic told me they only enable the feature if the patient experiences issues with exhalation. I tried it out just to see what EPR was like and sure enough my AHI went up (even if I increased the low-end of my pressure range). I don't have any issues exhaling with EPR turned off, so I don't use it. I'm sure this is ultimately what your doctor is getting at, but just saying they don't believe in it without explaining why is unfortunate.

I don't understand doctors who are more worried about themselves and their own misconstrued perceptions then they are the comfort and compliance of their patients. Without EPR I was 100% non-compliant with EPR 100% compliant. Seems like a no brainer to me.

I can see how EPR could cause a higher AHI in some people but if it comes down to helping a patient adjust and increasing compliance then I'd think the doctor would rather have a slightly elevated AHI using EPR then full blown apnea due to non-compliance.
