Anybody using a VideoCam at night?

Post by park_ridge_dave » Sat May 01, 2010 10:10 am

I was reading a thread and saw a remark about getting an S9, PulsOx and a camera in the bedroom. I immediately stifled my usual "knee jerk" reaction (Not hard to do with artificial knees ) to post a "Risque" observation and decided to ask the forum a "serious" question.

I have one of those Sony videocams that has an low level IR light source. Are they worth the trouble to set up for observing how much "tossing and turning" I do?

I would imagine that it would not be hard to check the tape against the CPAP reports and the SpO2 data?? (looking for positional?)

What am I forgetting

Cheers,

Dave

sorry i don't have anything more brilliant to add.

well, the sleep labs all use cameras. just make sure you have the timestamps right.

my first reaction to your post was .. "to record WHAT?!"

EDIT: I think (but not sure) that they use them to record the sleeping position but also to check for restless legs or sleepwalking etc

I did that once as an experiment - I was quite surprised at how much I DIDN'T toss and turn. I'd suggest just "give it a go" - mine has a built-in hard drive so capturing an entire sleep wasn't an issue - so assuming you can do that too then why not?

Now that "garbage" was what I was trying to avoid

Gee does that imply that great minds "think alike"? And I was trying my best to be "nice".

Thanks for the help. Anybody got Paris Hilton's Phone number?

But seriously folks, I am trying to see if I am suffering positional apneas

Thanks for the laughs "guys". Oh, you were being serious

Dave

Take the Nike approach: just do it!

Besides, you should know better than to set yourself up like that on this forum...

Assuming there is no unusual activity (of any kind !), I could see two uses:

1. Positional related aepneas. Of course, if your AHI is low, you couldn't draw any conclusions anyway.

2. To see when you are half awake. I find myself dozing some of the time and look at the clock, but I'm too groggy to write it down. The video would help. I was curious to see if the detailed data changes when I'm half awake, since it bothered me that the summary data records "mask time, not "sleep time." That, in turn, makes it difficult to relate how I feel to sleep time.

Isn't that how Tiger Woods got into quite a bit of trouble? Sorry, just couldn't resist. Hopefully, he skipped the video cams.

For me positional sleep apnea is easy to identify with the CPAP software. I wear a backpack to prevent rolling onto my back. Below is an example of what typically happens if I roll to my back. On this chart, at about hour 5.5, I took off the backpack, rolled onto my back and fell asleep. Not a pretty picture.

Dramatic indeed. Thanks for the vivid imagery!

Ro[o]ster,

Yes dramatic data and that would be good except that I only have CPAP functionality That was one of my prime motivators for "taping"; to see if I was suffering positional apneas.

Or is there some way to spot PA from the detailed CPAP reports (Encore Pro reports)?

I will get out the equipment and try it tonight to see if I am moving/awakening and if so, when.

Cheers,

Dave
