Full face mask a cure for mouth dryness?

Post by iphonehome » Sun Apr 18, 2010 10:48 am

Should switching from a nasal mask to a full face mask help with decreasing my mouth dryness? Nothing else seems to have helped: taped mouth, humidifier.

If you are mouthbreathing, and you probably are, it will help. More important it will be more likely your XPAP treatment will work, being that the air to open your airway is retained. Jim

You mention a humidifier, but you do not show a CPAP humidifier in your profile. If you are using a room humidifier....it's not enough. If you don't have a CPAP humidifier....get one. A FF mask will definitely help also.

I switched from a nasal to a FFM because of the mouth breathing. I also had a high leak rate that looked like a train wreck. I tried taping, and it helped, but the FFM was the best solution for me. And my leak rate is now almost a flat line.

I also switched to a FFM from a nasal mask bc of the Sahara Mouth syndrome. It made ALL the difference. Before the aforementioned Sahara Mouth episode, I had no idea one's mouth get even GET that dry.

Turn up your humidifier and put something on your lips to keep them moist.

Well my humidifier was up to 4.0 (which I believe is the maximum level) but I had to drop it down to 3.5 because I was getting soaked with water in my face mask every night. I will try it at 4.0 again and I'll put something on my lips before bed too. I usually keep a bottle of water at bedside too, but hopefully I won't need to anymore. Thanks for your advice!

FFM user here, and even with my humidifier cranked to the max and going through a full tank of water in 2 nights, I still often wake up with a dry mouth. Comes with the territory I guess!

A chinstrap under the headgear can help keep your jaw shut and help prevent the dry mouth. Unless you're not able to breath through your nose, then you should try to get the therapy through your nose rather than your mouth.
