which cpap to buy

Post by awakeandhappy » Fri Oct 14, 2005 1:26 pm

HI
I am a new user to this web site from Canada. I am in the process of purchasing a cpap as I just found out I have severe sleep apnea. The local companies where I will purchase from only deal with one company only. one deals with resmed and the other respironics. I need a unit that can use also a 12volt adapter that hooks into a cigarette lighter when I travel with my truck driver husband.Should I use the resmed s8 model or the remstar line.I really want to try the swift nasal pillows from resmed so may have to use the s8 model from resmed. Any comments on this system. Thanks

Hi there,

The easist cpap to travel with is the Puritan Bennet Goodknight 420 Series. The 420g is the base model and 420s, which can download information is the middle, and the 420E is the Self-Adjusting model.

These machine are extremely versitile, because not only are they very small, at 1.5lbs, they can be run off of a cigarette lighter and a portable battery pack, that are all made by the same company.

Here are the models to look at.

Here is a links to these units at cpap.com

I agree with Ted. I travel all over with my 420 machine. You won't be disappointed.

Also, please make sure to get a heated humidifier. They make one especially for the 420 series.

Also, I'm not familiar with the rules regarding your equipment in Canada; but here in the States, the local suppliers of CPAP equipment engage in highway robbery. The only cost effective way to purchase a machine is from places such as the cpapstore.com or right here at cpap.com. You can find the same machine for 1/3 the price. Shop around.

Finally, since you live in chilly Canada you MUST purchase the heated hose from http://www.sleepzone.com.au/ For all those cold nights, it will make a world of difference for you! It comes from Austrialia.

Hi Awakeandhappy:
The 420 line of CPAP machines are very small and easy to travel with; I've had great success hauling mine around.

Also, you can use just about any mask with any machine; you do not have to buy a ResMed machine just because you want to use a ResMed mask. If you are going to buy an autoPAP machine, try to trial different machines before you buy. I know of several equipment suppliers here in Ontario that will rent machines so that you can find the one that suits you best.

The S8 is still a good choice as it to has a 12v socket.

When adding a h/h though you will need a special power unit (an inverter) as the h/h for both PB and the S8 require this if you want to run the units off a 12v source.

Also be aware that the PB with h/h requires two power cords & the PB h/h is switched on seperately whereas the S8 has the one cord & the h/h knob on the front.

Both are excellent choices.

I am looking for a portable, travelable, lightweight, autopap with heated humidifier that will run on battery power. I will need one overseas. I will be staying on a Kibbutz in the land of our forefathers (Israel). Apologies to our Muslim CPAP friends.

Is the Goodknight 420E Auto CPAP my best choice? Are there any other choices or options to consider? How easy / difficult are they to recharge?

I'm not to sure about the availability or reliability of electricity on a Kibbutz.

Snore, I think you are just across the bay from me in Tampa (from something you said in another thread). If so, we could get together and you could take a personal look at my 420e (same size as all in the 420 series) and the matching heated humidifier.

Just PM or email me.

There is a battery powered xPAP machine now available. The AURA. See cpap.com.

That may be a possible choice.

Cheers

Thanks Bill. Yep I live in NW Tampa, not far from Countryside. I appreciate the offer. I was hoping that poster named Crazy something would invite me over, too. She lives in Tampa. She posted a great picture... at least Lori and I thought so.

But I have to admit, when she said she her husband said she was a loud snorer, it sort of burst my CPAP fantasy bubble... j/k.

Will someone please tell me if you have to have the softwear for both these units or do they show a read out on the screen. I want to be able to read some results now, it might help! or is the screen readout no sufficient info? thanks

All you'd have to do is head West on 580 through Oldsmar, and ...

I'd urge you to be very careful about buying from cpap.com.

See this discussion, for example:

Morpheus, I politely suggest that you stop cross-posting about problems you may be having with the forum sponsor. You've already got at least 2 other threads that I recall involved with your issues. Isn't that enough?

If you truly have are having trouble with a company there are avenues you should persue possibly including the Better Business Bureau.

Dragging your issue across any and all threads is not making you look good.

Point well taken, Bill, though in fact it's only one thread. BBB is a good idea - though it turns out, alas, that cpap.com is not a member.

It might not make him/her "look good" OR, it speaks to how concerned he/she is about the issue. Two sides of the same coin?
