ResMed S9 caught on fire!
ResMed S9 caught on fire!
Early AM this morning, I awoke with a terrible smoke smell filling my nostrils. I opened my eyes and saw a flickering light dancing in the corner of my eyes. Suddenly I realized what was happening! MY S9 had small flames coming out of it!
I quickly jumped out of bed yelling for my wife to get up in case this got out of hand. I scooped up my distilled water jug and poured it on the machine but the water just poured down the sides while the flame still festered inside the machine!
I was starting to panic at this point so I ran out of my bedroom to get to our fire extinguisher. I pulled the pin out and pulled the handle but the stupid thing didn't do anything. I looked at the gage and realized that it had lost its pressure somehow. I instructed my wife to call 911 while I tried to throw my blankets over the machine to smother the flames. I was finally able to get things under control when I looked at a calendar and realized what the date was today. Sorry, but I had to do it... APRIL FOOLS!

Okay, you had me too until the more I read the more I could start seeing it wasn't right. Wish you didn't put S9 in the subject though, but it did reel me in.
It reminds me of an old Frasier episode (one of the best) where Niles is at Frasiers and nobody else is there as they all went out, and he's getting read for his date and decides to iron/press his trousers, realises a loose thread so goes to get some scissors to cut the thread, leaves the iron on the trousers, cuts the loose thread, cuts himself, meanwhile trousers are starting to burn with the iron on them, sees the blood on his finger, faints, to cut long story short..... trousers catch alight, tries to douse them, eventually throws the burning trousers onto the couch, the couch sets alight, he gets the fire extinguisher to put out the fire that's now raging, lets it loose, its so powerful he sprays everything except the fire he needed to put out on the couch then has to get water from the sauce pans to put out the fire. It's a classic episode!
For anyone wanting to watch it, you can at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mWiPaQ872c

Re: ResMed S9 caught on fire!
Water should not be dumped on electrical equipment unless it is unplugged. Water fog can be used on live electrical equipment, and water fog fire suppression systems are now being installed in computer rooms instead of Halon systems.
This illustrates the importance of periodically checking your fire extinguishers -- it also illustrates the need for having more than one fire extinguisher. I keep three dry chemical extinguishers in my small condo; in my kitchen, utility room, and foyer. The reason for the foyer is that you can keep yourself between the fire and the door as you are getting the extinguisher. For example, if the fire is in the living room, it would be bad to have to go deeper into the house to get an extinguisher from the kitchen -- you don't want the fire between you and the door.
As the fire was inside the case, it may have been possible to pick it using a piece of pure cotton or wool bedding as a hand protector and toss it into a bathtub or shower -- then dowse it with water. The hand protector would have to be cotton or wool though, 100% cotton or wool is either fire resistant or self-extinguishing and doesn't melt -- polyester burns and melts.

All April Fools jokes aside, these are all very good tips, and yes, you certainly dont want to throw water onto live electrical equipment.bearded_two wrote:Water should not be dumped on electrical equipment unless it is unplugged.
