mouth breathing tape?strap? help?

Post by Flowergirl51 » Tue Mar 23, 2010 7:33 am

I've been using a mask that puts air in my nose but discovered recently that I loose it through my mouth. I haven't been feeling rested lately. Suggestions please? Terry aka Flowergirl51

you may need either a chin strap or a full face mask. Visit with your sleep therapy provider for the best option for you!

Hi Terry!

Other than the mouth-leaking, how have you been? Haven't seen you on here for quite some time.

Yeah, mouth-taping, chinstrap or full face mask are the main options for mouth-leaking.......take your pick.

EDIT: I presume this is you.....

Chinstrap didn't work for me, FFM leaked, in the end used #2080 3M blue painter's tape. For nasal mask, suggest 1 inch or 1 1/2 inch wide; the 2 inch might be too wide.Make sure to get #2080, it has the least amount of adhesion and leaves very if any residual in the morning. I also apply some lansinoh lanolin (better than chapstick) on my lips.

Only downside is can't take any calls once I'm taped up

There are a number of possible fixes. You've named some of them. Which one is best for YOU is something only YOU can determine. (Some of us have tried them all at one time or another.)

1. Full-face mask*
2. Taping mouth
3. "Gluing" mouth (Polident strips between lips)
4. Chinstrap

*This includes hybrid masks, which have a mouth enclosure and nasal pillows instead of the enclosure extending up over the nosebridge. That's my current solution...the RespCare Hybrid. (The ResMed Mirage Liberty is a similar design but didn't seal well for me.)

Those are a few off the top of my head...all things I tried in my quest. Others will be able to add to the list, I'm sure.

You'll find detailed discussions on each method by searching here.

I tape. Chinstraps don't work for me either and the thought of giving up my nasal pillows for a full face mask is not appealing to me. Taping works well for me. You'll need to experiment to see what works for you.

Yep its most likely the "me" your asking about. LOL. I had to begin rchop chemo awhile back and have two more sessions to go. In addition to the leukemia they found 5 lymphoma ulcers, one "aggressive" so this is aggressive chemo. I've been doing great. Jesus is my Healer and so I'm not concerned about "prognosis". I've less hair than when last we espoke.. And less hair than my dh.....LOL...the first day of what was sposed to be 7 hr chemo ended up as 7 hrs one day, my body reacting badly to amount of toxins released as cancer cells broke down, so was admitted to hospital for second day which took 10 more hours of uneventful very slow chemo, I flipped open my bible and it opened to Matthew...He knows when every sparrow falls and He has numbered every hair on my head. God is so kind and has a sense of humor too. BTW when we moved out to Copley a couple yrs ago, He gave me from psalms and also a passage in Isaiah, "I will take care of you in your old age.....when your hair is gray (that means I'm going to have hair again!) in your old age you will be full of sap (good bone marrow and filled w/the Holy Spirit's life), flourishing and more fruitful than in your former years" That means I'm going to live to into a good old age...not a miserable old age!!!!

There is a wonderful change of atmosphere at home as I've been keeping a gratefullness notebook/joy jounal whatever you'd call it....I wake up anticipating good things ...to see the goodness of God in the moments of my day and write them down...the most personal things, like the chickadee that visited my window in the morning as I passed by, are a kiss from Him....He loves to see His kids smile....

Thanks for asking! Terry

You must see me at night when my wife and I tapped our mouths. It is hilarious trying to maintain a conversation like that.

Some are able to train themselves not to leak but it requires the right morphology (size & shape of throat/tongue tissue). I trained myself not to leak early on and had leak-free treatment for the first 3 years without FF mask, chin-strap, tape, glue, staples, or any other measure. Then I lost a bunch of weight and I guess the fat loss from my neck changed the morphology and I was no longer able to maintain a leak-free seal ... started leaking puffs of air more and more frequently til the lips were flapin in the wind.

Taping and gluing were on the bottom of my list of options. The chin-strap alone did not work because air would still leak out between my lips even though my lower jaw was held firmly in place. What I noticed was that with a chin-strap, I could stop the lip flapping by holding a couple of fingers over my lips and that seemed sufficient to make the seal. So I used a head band to place over my lips and then the chin-strap over that to hold the head band in place (so that it would not slip off my lips while tossing my head around on my pillow). It has been working for me for about 6 months now. No tape or glue or painful staples to pull off every morning.

I was a huge mouth breather. I tried tape, polident ,chin strap . tried the hybrid,liberty..didn't work because my nose closes up. SO I switched to full face. In my case the Full Life. What I like about it is that it has a strap that goes under your chin. Somehow after using this mask for awhile my mouth doesn't seem to come open as much. Maybe just the strap on it under my chin helps not sure, but it seems to work

I will keep this for a few days of laughter. Thanks to:

Jersey girl - she recommended a site for googles, they were too expensive so tried a pair of my swim googles.
Gerald - his recommendation and specs for the blue painters tape. Although I'm going to try medical paper tape tonight

Sleep well
