IS THIS NORMAL???

Post by PEGLEG616 » Tue Mar 23, 2010 12:41 am

I HAVE HAD MY CPAP FOR ABOUT A WEEK. I HAVE NOTICED THAT I CAN'T SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT. THE MASK DOESN'T BOTHER ME, I JUST WAKE UP AFTER A FEW HOURS AND CNA'T GO BACK TO SLEEP. IS THIS NORMAL WHEN I START OUT? ALSO, I HAVE GOTTEN SICK. DO I KEEP USING IT THEN? OTHER THAN THAT, IT HAS BEEN A MARRIAGE SAVER!! I HAVE SEVERE SLEEP APNEA AND MY WIFE WAS AT HER WITS END WITH THE SNORING AND SNORTING. THAT STOPPED IMMEDIATELY WHEN I STARTED WITH MY CPAP MACHINE.

I work swing shifts. I work 2 days then 2 nites followed by 4 days off. For some odd reason when I have to work days The night before I readily fall asleep but I seem to awaken in the wee hours then I have a lot of trouble trying to fall asleep. The rest of the week i seem to do fine other than when I battle rain out issues. I think the issues i am having with sleep now are more work and stress related than the machine and therapy. But there is certainly an adjustment period of having this equipment strapped to your face. I think we are both going through a phase of relearning to sleep with our equipment and dealing with the newness of it all. Hopefully i will regain a better sleeping routine. The immediate benefit i have is not creating a sleeping hell for my wife whom has dealt with my horrific snoring. We are back sleeping together in the same bed comfortably and happily. We have a new normal now. I am sure it will take us some time to get used to this to get the right gear and set up. I am on my third week and I feel like i adapt more each day to sleeping with the equipment. I am sure you will too. I am in sleep debt mode I believe. Looking forward to getting past that mode. Hopefully nailing down my nights when i have trouble falling back to sleep myself. I am confident I am benefitting from this therapy. Rome wasnt built in a day.
I would say you have your new normal and are on track.
Each day will get better as we over come what obstacles we must to heal our selves.
Good luck hope to hear from you on your progress

MY BROTHER SAID THAT IT'S BECAUSE MY BODY IS GETTING AS MUCH SLEEP IN THOSE FEW HOURS AS IT'S USED TO GETTING IN A WHOLE NIGHT. SO WHEN IT DOES, IT WANTS TO WAKE UP. HE SAID IT WILL TAKE TIME FOR MY BODY TO GET USED TO GETTING THAT MUCH SLEEP. I FIND THAT HARD TO BELIEVE, BUT I THOUGHT I WOULD SEND OUT FEELERS AND SEE IF IT WAS, INDEED, TRUE. HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OF THIS...OR IS MY BROTHER JUST NUTS??? LOL

What you're describing is pretty much the same thing that I experienced.

I started CPAP at the end of November, and for the first week or two, I would wake up, wide awake and be up and ready to go.

I think the explanation that your brother gave was perfectly reasonable.

Good luck and enjoy being back among the living...

You brother is telling it as it is, it happens to many of us in the beginning --it's as though the mind suddenly doesn't know what to do with all that pleasant sleep.

Yup. Pretty common. You might want to consider taking naps later in the day. But you will start sleeping longer and longer.

Well, THAT might be true as well!

By the way, welcome to the forum! You should register as a member and then list your equipment. That way we can tailor a answer to your specific equipment.

But the most important thing ... We hope you continue to enjoy the chance to get great sleep and continue to have (what appears to be) very successful therapy!

STARTING A NEW JOB TODAY ON 2ND SHIFT. BEING A MORNING PERSON, THIS WILL BE ROUGH. IT BEATS BEING UNEMPLOYED, THOUGH. I APPRECIATE ALL THE ENCOURAGING WORDS FROM Y'ALL. I KNOW MY WIFE IS SO THANKFUL FOR CPAP!! I DO HAVE ONE BIG QUESTION, THOUGH. SHOULD I KEEP USING MY CPAP WHILE I AM SICK? I HAVE A BAD COLD AND I ALMOST BLEW MY MASK OFF COUGHING LAST NIGHT. I CAN'T SEEM TO SLEEP WELL WHILE I AM SICK AND WITH THE CPAP. DO I STOP USING IT UNTIL I AM BETTER?

Congrats on the new job. Hope you will adjust to it well. Getting good sleep will help.

I think many of us have stories of very grateful "spice", who think the quite is WONDERFUL !

Well, it's just my experience, but I find that I do better if I continue to use the mask. This is when I use nasal decongestants. I normally recommend avoiding them like the plague. But when my nose is COMPLETELY stopped up, I will use a nasal decongestant to help open my airway. I will squirt it once (per directions) and then in about 15 to 30 minutes repeat the process. My pulmonologist taught me that trick almost 20 years ago. And of course, getting a good night of sleep plus some chicken soup seems to do the best job at helping me bounce back from a cold.

Struggling with a cold myself right now. It doesnt make it easier. I still think i sleep more with it on than I would have with it off. Today i have to work a night shift and woke up several times due to my nose being so stuffy. Overall thought i slept longer than I would have had i not been using the mask. Hopefully i will feel good working my night shift. Shifts are hard on the body and take a lot of getting used to. It will take you several months to get used to your new sleeping pattern. You will though and the up side is you have money coming in. Good luck with a new job.
