Throat pressure

Post by Drew new full face apap user » Sun Mar 14, 2010 6:23 pm

After using my apap for three nights, not so successfuly, I feel like there is a constant pressure in me throat all day. Even after being off od the apap. My pressure range is 6-16. I feel like I can take full breaths, but the constant pressure in my lower throat is a bit unnerving. Is this normal for a first time user. Should I have daytime pressure in my throat.

Drew,

That is a new one on me. Perhaps I'll celebrate a bit at your expense--finally, there is a CPAP problem that I didn't have.

What kind of problems are you having when you use the machine? Perhaps if we solve those problems, the throat issue will sort itself out.

Finally, are you using a humidifier, and if so, at what setting? I am wondering if your throat is drying out and you are feeling it as pressure?

This is a very wide pressure range. Can you join, fill out the equipment profile (text not images) and tell us what pressure the lab prescribed for you?

I have had some leaking issues but I think I have that solved. Sleeping on my side with my mask pressed against my pillow seems to help with the leaks. I do use a heated humidifyer. I had it set at medium last night and there was actually water in the hose that woke me up. My mask had lots of condensation in it, so I had plenty of humidity. I turned it down half way through the night.
But this pressure in the front of my throught ( by my Adams apple) is a bit unnerving.
The 6-16 pressure on my resmed auto pap is my prescribed pressure range. Thanks for the help.

Drew,

The water in the hose is called "rainout". It happens when the warm air goes into the hose, and colder air is hitting the outside of the hose. There are a few ways to combat this problem. One is to make sure that the machine is lower than your bed. That way, the water will run back into the machine rather than into your nose or mouth. Second, you can try a hose cover. Some folks have recommended a heated hose. The point here is that if you can reduce or solve the rainout problem, you can run with a higher humidity. The higher humidity might help your throat.

Thanks John. Maybe it is just dry. I'll give putting the machine lower a try tonight. Hopefully that is all that it is. Again thanks a lot for the suggestion.

Hi, I am new to this also. I had used my cpap for 2 nights and felt pressure from my nose down my throat. I also had black circles and very puffy under my eyes. I was told that my humidity was too high. I had turned it up to 4. So I turned it down to 2. But my nose and throat are still stuffy. It turned into a sinus infection. Do you have sinus problems? I am still trying to figure out what to do.

I was thinking it might be worth while to have an ENT looks down your throat.

If your pressure is breaching the gastroesophageal valve, you may have acid coming up from your stomach and affecting our throat. This sometimes causes hoarseness, and a need to constantly clear your throat, or a feeling of something stuck in your throat.

An ENT can diagnose it.
