Latest efforts for good night sleep

Post by tcaron » Thu Mar 11, 2010 2:56 pm

Like a lot of folks here I've been faithfully using my Autoset II, chin strap and Resmed Gel nasal mask with good success, wearing it all night, but continue to gets mild leaks as indicated with my Rescan monitoring. I have suspected that my mouth has been opening too much. Still feel tired during the day. More than I should but better than without it.

I bought a Snore-ex mouthpiece and wore it last night. I found it very comfortable and to my surprise wore it all night.

When I checked my readings via Rescan low and behold the leaks were almost 0! Can't wait to try again tonight.

Anyone experiance similar results with a mouthpiece?

I always wondered if there are times when the CPAP is not able to power 100% of the air through the blockage resulting in less than optimal oxygen into the lungs resulting in being tired the next day even though I've worn the thing all night?

Could it be that the mouthpiece worn in conjunction with the CPAP allows the CPAP to perform better?

Yup. I've done the same in the past. It helped for a long time.

It's not for everyone. You need to be careful it does not hurt your teeth. Using a bite plate like that can increase gum disease. Also using a bite plate (if it moves your lower jaw too far forward) can loosen teeth. So, I suggest you also discuss it with your dentist.

But, sure, moving your jaw forward helps open your airway. More so for some folks than others.

By itself, I did not one of those bite plates to be much of a cure, but as you noted, it adds just a little more "umph" to help xPAP therapy.

Of course, it might indicate you need a pressure adjustment ... So, as always, though I offer my own experience, I suggest you also talk it over with your sleep specialist.
