Gotta be an easier way!! H4i humidifier basin

Post by ka-ann » Thu Mar 11, 2010 5:44 am

Is there something I don't know about the H4i humidifier basin? It is so hard to clean. The way it is designed you can't get inside of it to wipe it out. It is hard to get soap etc rinsed out due to where the holes are. I try to rinse it out everyday but sometimes I would just like to give it a good washing with a cloth! It is hard to fill. I have spilled distilled water everywhere trying to get it into hole until I started using a small cup. Any ideas how to clean this thing really well. It being such a moist environment I worry about some kind of build up or mold.
Thanks
Karen

This was one reason why I stopped using the H4i, partly because of the filling/cleaning of it was a real pain, but also I was seeing a lot of rainout. They've redesigned the reservoir now for the S9 (see viewtopic/t50087/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=50083) and it's much more user friendly to fill/clean.

I wash mine with soap and water and vinegar. Swish the soapy water around inside and then rinse well. Then, I follow up with a diluted vinegar solution and swish around again. To dry, I have a cloth that I have cut to a better size and push it through the fill hole. I use my finger to move the cloth around and dry it, or, I dry the reservoir by putting it on a towel and letting it air dry all day. It hasn't been difficult for me to keep my reservoir clean.

I use a wet paper towel and a pair of curved hemostats to try and get into the corners, curves and ridges.

Personally I think this was designed on purpose so it can't be cleaned well in order to increase sales. That is the only reason I can see to design it that way!

Take a look at the bottom of the H4i, the one I looked at you can remove the metal plate to get inside.

I clean the tank every few months.
I use Polident denture tabs.
Fill it w/relative hot water. Drop in two tabs.
Let it sit for 15-20mins. Rinse.

If you're concerned about it, do it more often.

Pretty easy. Not buying tanks every week.

Mine came with a yellow plastic cleaning lid which seals all the holes allowing you to shake the tank vigorously to clean it. I use vinegar for this purpose, then rinse it out with water. No need to get inside to scrub as there is no residue in the tank if you clean once a week. Important to use distilled water as well to avoid mineral deposits.

Here is a link to the "dishwasher safe" H4i chamber which allows you to open it up completely (the bottom plate is removable, but it's not intuitive): https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... amber.html

I agree these are poorly designed - even this dishwasher safe one is far more complicated to open/close than the new PR System One chamber - that one is very well designed, both for filling and cleaning.

I go through the same weekly routine as SleepyBobR. Once a week cleaning in vinegar and water - shake vigorously with the yellow cover on top. I always used only distilled water in the tank and never have a buildup.

Regards to all,

I purchased a cheap, narrow-necked funnel at an auto supply store and use that to fill the humidifier. It works fine. You may want to verify that it would fit your humidifier tank, but this one looks like it'd be even better than what I've been using because it'd be more stable: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/Humidi ... unnel.html.

I think that ResMed should include a funnel with their tank! And they should design the standard tanks so that they open for cleaning (although I use distilled water and never have felt the need to wipe the inside).

There is am upgrade t0 the 4hi reservoir that you can get. It comes aparts and is dishwsasher safe. I have it and it is now a breeze to keep it clean and fill. I would of bought it from cpap but it wasn't available but another internet site does have it I think it was about $40.

I have only cleaned mine with dish liquid soap and water. I will try the vinegar and water and the polident tablets. I rinse it most every day and wash it with soap at least once a week. It looks clean but ... I will think about investing in the other basin. This is a part of life and it needs to be as simple as possible as I work a lot and have 3 kids and needless to say am too busy for a lot of fuss. The person who designed this basin obviously does not have to use one!!! Thanks for you help.
