Which BiPAP Machine?

I started CPAP therapy approximately 5 years ago. I just completed a new sleep study and the doctor has prescribed a BiPAP. I know virtually nothing about a BiPAP. CPAP was set at 16, now I will apparently be getting a BiPAP set at 19 and 15. From my experience with the CPAP, the EPR function was wonderful. Is there something similiar on a BiPAP? Thank you in advance. I wanted to post my question here before I talk to either the DME or cpap.com.

Well, the EPR function makes the CPAP feel similar to a BiPAP. However, a BiPAP actually provides more breath support during the exhalation as well as the inhalation. So, if you used EPR you will not notice a lot of difference. But it will help your body better avoid obstructive apneas.

So the basic difference is that a BiPAP unit provides one pressure when you inhale and another (lower) pressure when you exhale. Those are known as IPAP (Inhalation Positive Airway Pressure) and EPAP (Exhalation Positive Airway Pressure). Here's a link in the Wiki to explain more:

It's unfortunate, and this is really unfortunate, but it depends on which manufacturer's machine best meets with your breathing requirements, and through its algorithm best solves your apnea and hypopnea anomalies. It's really too expensive to experiment, but there's no other way to provide an answer. I started with Resmed and had unfortunate results, switched to Respironics, and had a way more favorable outcome. But your outcome may be just the opposite.

Any solution you choose will improve your sleep deprivation. But one may be superior to the other.
