CPAP question

Post by Seth B » Mon Mar 01, 2010 4:59 am

I have been using a CPAP for about 8 months and was finally getting used to it when I uncovered a new problem. Lately I have noticed water making its way into the tube and I keep waking up with water dripping in my nose. Another problem associated with this water issue is that the tube is making funny noises when I breathe. Has someone experienced this?

Turn down your humidifier. If it's already off though, or set on 1, hopefully someone else will have an answer. The noises would likely be gurgling of water in the hook-up.

Seth,
Check out the CPAP Wiki (Yellow Lightbulb at the top of the forum) and search on 'Rainout'. As the air travels down the hose, it cools in your cold room, condensing the water onto the sides of the hose and sometimes even in your mask. If there is a dip in the hose between your machine and the mask, the water will sometimes even pool in the hose. Then you'll sometimes hear some awesome flushing noises in the hose as you breathe in and out.

Most likely a hose cover will fix it for you. It will keep the air at an even temperature as it goes down your hose. You can make one from old socks, a strip of remnant fleece from the fabric store or an old blanket. As Julie suggested, definitely turn down your humidification too. The warm air in the tank will still tend to cool some as it hits the cooler surface of the hose if the temperature differential is large enough.

I have also at one time had the same problem with water collecting in the tube. This went on for about a week then it stopped but so did the humidifier. I brought it down for service to find out that sometimes you can lose the connection between the CPAP and the humidifier causing it to act irradically. A simple fix to try is remove the humidifer make sure the connections are not corroded and re-connect it. Remove the water container, put it on level 1 and see how hot it gets. check all the settings up to the highest to see if they get hotter as you raise the levels. After I tried it, it worked correctly and I have had no problems with it since.

Hope that helps.

Also make sure you are not filling the humidifier too full of water.

I had this issue real bad for a while...
So..
1) I turned down the humidifier
2) I bought some insulation from Lowes and wrapped half the hose with it. I also got a some "cotton strips" and wrapped
the rest of the hose make it insulated.
3) I lowered the unit. I had been on the nightstand next to my bed, so I moved it down to the
shelf just off the floor.

Doinng these three steps eliminated the rain out.

Thanks all. I really appreciate the suggestions.

I will try these things and report back.
