Hello! Results of sleep study

Post by jmcanzo » Fri Feb 26, 2010 6:16 pm

I am a newbie starting on a new journey. I finally went to my PCP on Monday 2/22/10 and said I think I have sleep apnea. He asked me a bunch of questions, agreed and referred me to a sleep institute. I made the appointment with them on Tuesday and they had me come in on Thurs. They asked me a bunch of questions again, measured my neck, and looked down my throat.
Agreed most likely have OSA. They have scheduled me for my sleep study on March 17, 2010 and my second one to set the pressures on March 23, 2010. The each start at 9:00 p.m. and end between 6 am and 7 am. I just hope I get enough sleep as I have to work the next day. I work in a hospital and the sleep institute is on campus, so I can get up shower and will already be at work! . At this point I do not know what type or kind of cpap they will show me. I just want to make sure I get the best for what my insurance will pay for. I have HAP HMO and they said the machine and sleep studies will be covered in full.

Hi, jm, and welcome to the forum.

You've got time to do some reading here before you "enjoy" your sleep studies in March ( ), and I suggest you do just that. Start with the CPAP Wiki (yellow lightbulb, top of the page) and the Where A CPAP Newbie Should Start thread. There's a ton of info and help to be had here, so I'm glad you found us before you even have a diagnosis and equipment. You'll be well-informed when that happens, which will definitely make your journey easier.

Feel free to ask any questions you have in the meantime. You're in good hands here.
Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

Dx 11/07: AHI 107, central apnea, Cheyne Stokes respiration, moderate-severe O2 desats. (Simple OSA would be too easy. ;))

PR S1 ASV 950, DreamWear mask, F&P 150 humidifier, O2 @ 2L.

Hi JM, and Welcome. Glad you found us before you go for your studies. You've already gotten some sound advice from BB, and if it were me, I'd follow her advice. I wish I had found this forum three years ago, and be armed with a great deal knowledge before I had my study done. It might have made a huge difference. Anyway... do read up on things, and keep us posted on how things go, and Welcome once again to the group.

Getting wired up was no big deal. The second night i struggled with the mask they gave me a little but other than that it was not all that too bad. One time i woke up to find a young ladies face about 10 inches from mine as she adjusted the straps. that really startled me to wake up and be staring in someones face.

So far I have looked at the whole thing as a great adventure to discover the holy grail of mask head gear and machine.

I slept more then I thought I would, with all those wires and stuff... I asked the tech how much she could tell me. Just said not a lot as the DR has to. She did say "I am pretty sure we will see you next week". I will be given my results on Mar 15. My second night is scheduled for Mar 17.

jm, I too am a newbie, Feb 8. Did you do your first study downtown at the main campus? If so I hope you were in one of the rooms on the left side of the hall, there was a lot of back ground noise from the ER. The first night was the worst night I ever had, but the second study was a lot better. I too have HAP they set me up with Lincare in Livonia, Steve is my contact and he was great. I have the Philips Respironics System One REMstar Pro Cflex+. If you have any questions please PM me.....

I had my study in Novi. The sleep center is part of the outpatient building so it is quiet at night. The ER is in the new hospital It was a little strange as I work at that campus.
Did you get to pick which machine you wanted? or did they just give you one.

Your Doctor has a lot of input into what type of machine - ie: cpap, apap, or bipap, and its based on your titration levels during the sleep study. Most providers (DME) have a limited selection of machines available as they tend to buy only one brand at a time. so, get your prescription and sleep study, and find a provider who has the equipment you want and that takes your insurance, or shop on-line if your insurance will reimburse you.

best of luck, Paul

Welcome to the board, Jim.

Here's some good reading for you while you're waiting for the titration night at the sleep lab --

LINK to Mile High Sleeper's great information resource for cpap users.
http://www.smart-sleep-apnea.blogspot.com

And some handy definitions:

Types of machines:
viewtopic.php?p=56836
"Whats the differences in BIPAP, XPAP, APAP, CFLEX"

Common abbreviations and definitions:
viewtopic.php?t=14902
"Learning lexicon of cpap terms"

Another very comprehensive glossary:
http://www.sandmansleep.com/resources/glossary.cfm

After the titration study is over, but BEFORE you let them give you a machine, be sure to print out the list of machines at the link below. If you are interested in monitoring your own therapy, I would strongly suggest NOT accepting any machine that is listed in red. Accept only a machine listed in blue:

My list of machines that record "full data" (AHI and leak info) and those that don't -- updated through March 2010:
viewtopic.php?p=307168#p307168

DME might not understand what "Full data" is.

Good luck and keep posting here!

Welcome,
I my self have been diagnosed with severe OSA with in the last 2 weeks. I was put on a Bipap AVAPS, and wow the difference it has made on my life so far. I am sleeping a good 5 to 6 hours a night, where I have not slept for than 10 mins in a few years. Currently after 5 hours I wake up so refreshed I could run the boston marathon twice. I still get tired around noon every day after waking up at 6 am.. But I am sure after a few more weeks I will be 100% I havnt had the machine more than 5 days.

I have found the advice here amazing, the people so caring and thoughtfull, I feel finding out about my problem has been more of a blessing than a curse. I have spent alot of time reading and understanding my problem, My only advice is to spend time and read as much as possible about the OSA, the more you understand the easier it becaoes to fight the problem.

Good luck and let us know how your sleeping once you machine is setup and going for a few days..
