Fright Night

Post by TrueBlue » Fri Feb 19, 2010 2:16 am

Has anyone else had middle of the night panic attacks with their masks ? I have no problems at all with my nasal pillows and wear them very comfortably going to bed and falling asleep. But a few times recently I've woken suddenly in an an absolute panic feeling terribly claustrophobic and I can't rip the mask off quickly enough. My heart pounds fast and it takes several minutes to settle down again after which of course I'm wide awake. The whole thing passes quite quickly but it's starting to worry me becaue it's very disruptive and scary, especially the pounding heart bit. I don't suffer from panic attacks normally so I know this has something to do with the nasal pillows and also the fact that I have to tape my mouth (I can't handle the full face mask).

I wonder if you are having an apnea event that is causing you to feel that way. What is your pressure set at. I see you have A ResMed Autoset, is it set to straight c-pap or auto and do you have the EPR set and if so to what?

Yes, I have had those a few times. I came to the conclusion (for me anyway), that I was NOT getting the inhale pressure consistently (we have proven I have a problem triggering the machine I was on -- long story), but I felt exactly what you're describing. An overwhelming panic to get that mask off my face as fast as possible.

For me, I talked myself through it, like I do anytime I have any breathing issue.

But I've had it happen before too.

I got those after the first 3 weeks. It was like my body had caught up with sleep and I was sleeping lighter and my sleeping mind realized "OMG there is something on my face!! We have too wake up NOW!!!"

First check your data for apneas, you are no longer used to them so you may be over reacting.
If there is no reason for it, then just take off the mask, get yourself settled down and PUT THE MASK BACK ON. You know you can breathe well because you fell asleep breathing easily. Say that to your self. It is like training a toddler. Be patient, repeat ad nauseum, don't let your sleep mind get away with it.

Are you able to note the time of night this occurs and then look at your report to see what was recorded by the machine on that specific night and time?

How long have you been a "Hose head"? Not sure how much you know about your machine and it's capabilities, such as looking at your data from the screen on your Autoset or do you have the software? It would be nice to see what is going on with leaks, pressure and if there is apnea events when you wake up feeling like that. If you don't have the software and lucky you, as you can get it right there in Australia. Then you could monitor your pressure range to see if it needs to be tweeked. Or if that is even the reason for your "panic attaches"

I tape my mouth too along with the nasal mask. I have a hard time with full face masks also and we each have our own preferences and need to do whatever it takes to make our treatment successful.
