Hey HamletsDemise; welcome. I'm in Canada too, with no insurance - and when I was diagnosed I was so sick I had no real option of working.
I got my current setup (see my sig line, below) for a flat $500 from a very compassionate doctor who instructed my supplier what to charge me. If I had insurance, they would have charged my insurance co over $2,000 for the same setup.
Couple of points:
I'd go back to the people who gave you your current machine and see if it can be repaired. That'd be one step.
Secondly: $600 for the machine you are describing is a pretty good price. BTW, the total amount you pay is eligible for the medical expense tax credit, so your actual after-tax cost will be something lower than $600 (depending on your tax situation).
Finally: depending on where you are (I'm in Toronto) I'd be happy to pass along my doctor's name.
