New Sleep Doc experience

Post by JeffH » Mon Feb 08, 2010 5:14 pm

Different as night and day. The new doc looked over the Encore reports I brought him and came to the conclusion that I was fine at a pressure of 13 and 15 was too high. He spent about 35 minutes with me and asked all kinds of questions and was through. He said he appreciated the reports I bought and when I come back in two months to bring those reports in. He wanted me to try a Hybrid mask to see if that would work for me. Said I would probably have to shave my beard to get it to work. He said I knew more about OSA than any patient he had ever seen.

His nurse was a real sweetheart in that she helped me get in earlier than I was originally scheduled for. All and all a really good experience. It kind of got down to probably mouth breathing could be the root of my troubles. We'll see....

Hang on to that doc

I am not convinced about the beard being a problem. My Hybrid has worked well with four days of growth and my beard is heavy and grows fast.

The beard will not interfere with the nasal pillows and the mouthpiece has a very small footprint, is very soft, and is pliable and seals easily (I removed the chinflap).

But I know you don't want to shave the beard, so maybe someone with a beard will chime in about their experience with the Hybrid.

BTW, if you decide to make the plunge, get the Hybrid, not the Liberty.

I'm probably going to try the Hybrid again. I originally had the first generation Hybrid. I'd appreciate your expertise with this mask. I know you have been successful getting it to work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

JeffH

Jeff
This new doctor of yours sounds like he knows what he's doing.
I like my new sleep doctor also. He is a keeper as RG stated. The sleep doctor I now have, has sent letters to both my Family Doctor, my Cardiologist, and my Orthopedic Surgeon. He was very concerned the other day when I was in his office about my blood pressure.

Wow! You actually spoke with your Sleep doctor?

I did my sleep study with a tech, called the office after over a week to learn that the sleep doctor had not even reviewed my study results, and once he does, he'll just forward them to my primary care physician who will then coordinate my care/provide my prescriptions. So far as I understand, at no point will I actually speak with the doctor who reviews the sleep study.

Depends on the situation. If it's pretty straight up OSA, and the primary care physcian (PCP) only wants the expert opinion, then you may not see the sleep specialist. They "read" the sleep study and make recommendations to you PCP. I rarely see the doctor who reads the X-Rays and don't think that's unusual.

But it's not always done that way. Sometimes (for differing reasons) you might see the specialist, who then orders the tests and prescribes the appropriate therapy.

So what was my AHI after turning the pressure down from 15 to 13?

1.0

Had three short wake ups.
