Preventing Rainout in Nasal Mask

Post by skeezix » Sun Feb 07, 2010 9:11 pm

Using ResMed Elite II.
Using Respironics Comfort Gel Nasal mask
Humidifier set to 2.5.
Room temp is 68F.

Have to blot the moisture in mask every 3 hours. Hose okay because I made a "jacket" for it.

Setting humidifier to 2.0 effectively turns it off - no rainout but wake up with swollen nasal passages and dry throat.

Setting room temp to 72F reduces problem but it's too warm to sleep.

Same problem using Respironics Comfort Select mask.

Same problem using FisherPaykel HC234.\

Any suggestions?

You might need a more robust cover for the hose. Or you might look into a heated hose. Search for "rainout" in the forum.

I agree with the heated hose. Also, what is the humidity in your bedroom?

Because I'm in AZ where the humidity is 25%, I also run a Vick's humidifier in the bedroom, to get it up to 40%. That way, I can set my cpap humidifier is set at 2 and be comfortable but not get rain out. Temperature 68-70.

But, the other night, it was raining, so humidity was 49%, and I got mask rain out. I don't know the physics of this, but am learning to balance room temperature and humidity with my cpap humidity.

I had the same problem of rain out or blocked sinuses. Room temp 72F

I made a jacket for the long hose with fleecy and polyester inside it. Rain out disapeard from hose but sill on mask.

I made a small jacket with fleecy and I fut around the small hose a piece of insul-Bright. The water disapeared from the small hose.

I went to see the allergie's doctor, I have a permanent sinuses problem. I need to use a cortisone spray each day, the doctor swears it has not side effects. My sinuses are OK with that. I have to adjust the dossage, as I need one or two times/day the spray. I use a gel for dry nose each night.

Now I'm able to let the humidifier at 2; at 2.5 I had rain out in the comfortgel and in my Activa after around 3 hours of utilisation. I ordered an aussie hose but it has not still arrived.

The allergies doctor told me there is a lot of people suffering from an almost permanet inflamation of the sinuses due to pollution, barometric changes and who knows. Even with plenty of humidity I can have one side of the nose blocked, I noticed if I use the humidificator at 3 I felt like breathing in a heavy environment, it was not pleasant. Maybe you can check that with your doctor, they can see in a symple exam if your sinuses are dry or swolen.
