Does anyone have experience with www.americarecpap.com

Post by gorfanides » Wed Feb 03, 2010 12:13 am

Hello to all,

I have been in contact with http://www.americarecpap.com investigating the possibility of getting my cpap supplies from them. According to what I've been told, they do all the insurance billing and put you on an automatic program that sends you a new mask, tubing, filters, etc... every 3 months or whatever duration your insurance will cover. I'm looking into this because the local firms that carry cpap equipment are not specialists in cpap and frankly are not very knowledgeable at all. I've learned more from doing my own searching, than what they have been able to answer. So, now I'd like your help. Does anyone have first hand experience with this supplier or possibly another that offers the same services? Personally it just seems to make sence to go to a provider that specializes in cpap even if they are not local than to go to a provider that sells everything medical A-Z.

Thanks,
gorfanides

Hi, I don't know anything about that company, but do you know that Cpap.com is the sponsor of this forum? And charges the lowest prices out there for equipment? Go look at their website, it's great.

Depending on your insurance I think what you will probably find is that you will not actually need supplies as often as your insurance is willing to provide them. Some people here have masks and hoses for over a year.

I think most of us realize this, and really appreciate cpap.com for doing so. That doesnt mean we cannot discuss the competition. Usually such conversations result in realizing that cpap.com is superior any way..

That being said, I think the draw here, is that they will bill your insurance, AND you can set up regular intervals to automatically receive equipment. Even though you might be able to make your mask or hose last longer than your interval, its nice to have a spare in case it breaks. Also, the ultra fine filters and non washable filters shouldnt be used beyond their life IMO.

How often do insurance companies usually replace masks?

I agree with Uncle Bob. The "automatic" plan is a cash cow for the DME, and overkill for the patient. I called and shut off the firehose of equipment when I was up to my ears in filters. Getting a package of one black and two white every two weeks. The co-pay was killing me.

I told them I'd call when I needed something. I since ordered a mask, but I've STILL got new filters and it's been almost a year...

Also, be certain to check with your insurance company. If you have a Preferred Provider Option, they may not have that company on their approved list. They then might not cover ANYTHING you purchase from them. It's always wise to check first.

As a fairly new OSA patient, my doctor referred me to a DME, to rent CPAP for 6 months at $700 /month, me paying 20%. My doctor said I'd have to show compliance for 4 months before insurance would reimburse purchasing a CPAP. I called Americare and got a ResMed S9 APAP, much better than DME was providing, and they took care of billing my insurance, which paid in about 40 days. I paid $300 out of pocket for APAP and (for 1 year) masks, tubing, filters, nasal pillows, humidifier). I ordered this on Tuesday, delivered Thursday afternoon. They are great to work with, fast, knowledgeable and efficient. No complaints at all.

$4200 total for a CPAP? Sounds crazy, even for our insane medical billing system. Maybe the DME had a "fantasy" $700/month price, I doubt the insurance would allow it.

I went with Americare a year ago and I hope your insurance does not drag their feet paying....If they do, your needed equipment will NOT be forthcoming. My last order was 10 months ago and because Medicare was slow setting up my account and paying, they refused to send any more supplies. I finally had to change suppliers to get my supplies last month, as Americare would not respond, even though I know they had been paid. I will NOT recommend them.

Apria (providing for Cigna) does it as follows:

Pillows/mask cushions every month (they send 2 extra sets with the full mask)
Filters every month (3 sent with the full mask)
Full Mask (no headgear) every 3 months
Hose every 3 months

Headgear every 6 months (though you may request new headgear with the mask - but they weren't clear on what circumstances that worked with)

As often as they can bet paid for them, it depends on who's paying and their rules. Jim

I use them >>>>>OKAY<<<<<< rating but not GREAT ---- You want to talk to them and get the SIZES & PRODUCTS you want they tend to ship cheaper stuff if they can but still charge BIG Prices to the Insurance Co. -BUT- that seem to be the way of business these days!

You can ALWAYS DROP them if they don't work out!

insurance company should use medical billing software to determine how much to give or cover their cost.
