Incredibly Dry Mouth....what to do?

Post by Dixie Lee » Fri Jan 29, 2010 12:51 am

I run moisturized oxygen through my Bipap with humidifier set at 3 and Still have to wake up six or eight times each night to wet my mouth with water. It's so bad that my lips become glued to my teeth. I''ve tried to discuss this with my doctor and with the reps at Apria and they just shine me on. act like I'm making an issue over nothing. This IS a real problem for me........Any suggestions? Anyone? PLEASE

What type of system? What is the pressure (pressure range)? What type of mask? There are all sorts of suggestions. You can research by using the SEARCH feature. But we need more detail to be more specific.

are there any meds you are taking that can contribute to this? many meds have dry mouth as a side effect

The cause is almost always mouth leaks ... or mask leaks if using FF mask.

My suggestion is that you consider registering onto the forum and fill out a profile so that experienced members can offer better help. My other suggestion is that you forget about the one who act as though you make issues over your therapy and take control of your treatment for yourself ... the way this treatment is intended to work.

Good Luck!

I used to wake up with my mouth open and my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth. I had to get up and take a drink to loosen it. Now I tape my mouth shut every night and wear a chinstrap to keep my jaw from dropping open and breaking my seal.

The probability of mouth-breathing or mouth-leaking are very high. Whether using a nasal mask or a full face mask, anytime you're losing your therapy air out your mouth or breathing through your mouth will give the same results.

Too much humidity can actually cause nasal congestion in many people......hence mouth-breathing.

Another possibility (assuming there is no mouth-breathing/leaking) is Diabetes.

I didn't think about the leaking, that makes perfect sense. It helps also if I use the humidifier on my machine and I don't use the chinstrap they send, instead I used a silk homemade strap to keep my mouth closed.

What has helped me out tremendously with my dry mouth issue, was to by a mouth wash for dry mouth. There are several different brands, like Oasis made by Sensedyn and Biotene.

They really work. As a mouth breather myself, my worst case was I woke up and the inside of my cheeks were pasted to my teeth and it was painful to seperate them. With the mouthwash, I have not had any problems anywhere near that anymore.

I hope this helps, it helped me.
