I am considering buying a ResMed S8 Autoset Vantage for use as a backup/travel unit. Any advice about buying used equipment?
Thanks, in advance, for any help. Take care!

As in any purchase, know your prices. Check comparable prices at cpapauction, or secondwindcpap.com. The Vantage is the older version of AutoSet II.
If you're buying on auction, check the seller's feedback. Email prior to bidding and ask any questions not covered in the description, eg. hours of use, if user was a smoker, etc.
If buying in person, I would push all the buttons, check all the settings, turn it on and of with different settings, etc. generally put it through it's paces. And check the condition of the filter and hose, compared to hours of use. I would replace both before using.
Ask if the Clinical Guide, Set Up Guide and User Manual are available.
Kind of like buying a used car.
