Sidesleepers - Strange, but Worked

Post by Maryland_Mike » Tue Jan 26, 2010 8:21 am

Last night I tried something different to keep my mask in place. As a side sleeper and a CPAP rookie who's getting more comfortable with the mask, I'm getting worse leakage numbers because I've been less strict about sleeping on my back.

I wrapped my pillow around my head into a "U" shape, with the open end of the U where my face is (obviously). I then wrapped the belt from my terry robe around the pillow and tied it up.

Yeah, it's kinda odd. But then again so is sleeping with a plastic mask covering my face. At first I felt a bit smothered, but I was able to fall asleep and woke up with a leakage number of .02, and I feel great. I slept on my back more than usual, and when I did roll onto my side any pressure on the mask was countered by the pillow pushing against the other side of my face.

It's only one night but I'll see how things go over a longer period of time.

I just hope you don't depend on a smoke alarm to keep you safe in the event of fire! I'd put a smiley face here normally, but somehow I'm not sure it's really funny.

Interesting! Will be waiting for an update on how this is working for you.

Those smoke detectors are loud enough to hear even with a pillow wrapped around your head. Believe me I know.

Haha, this is probably the quickest fix for leaks ever. Didn't the pillow come loose though? I tend to thrash a lot (maybe not so much now) in my sleep. Half the time I wake up with the pillows on the floor. Very funny though! Although it sounds pretty dangerous lol...

Yeah, the safety issue occurred to me as well, but my alarm clock woke me up no problem. I even snoozed a few times before untying the pillow. I don't have it super-tight or anything, and my face is open to the world. We'll see how this goes...

I ordered one of these for sidesleeping. Turning opposite the way they show in the photos seems like it will be more comforting.

Did you order the '1/2' a woman or the 'full' woman? I work best with the 'full' woman personally....

Have you considered just wearing the PapCap??? While I think your solution is ingenious, it's gotta be hot in there!

Rooster........

My mask has never, ever bothered me enough to consider sleeping in either a half of a woman, or even a whole woman........

Do they make that in a male version????? Now that I might be really tempted to try.

What man would leave a woman sleep in his lap like that anyway? I'll bet there's not one available.....

Can we please maintain a sense of respect towards women on this website? It would be nice. If you want that kind of talk, and to post such pictures, there's plenty of other sites on the web where you can do that.

I want to read about treating my sleep apnea. I'm not interested in dirty-old men jokes. They're boring and put me to sleep fast than my OSA. And nope, I am not a prude, so don't even bother using that as a defense. Just someone who is amazed at times by the disrespect men pay towards women, and then they wonder "honey, why are you so upset?" Duh.

Point well taken, speaking for myself, I meant no harm..... 99.9995% of the time, this is a very serious and 'fact rich' forum. Levity must be done tactfully and tastefully!

I have found that a very firm pillow works best for me. That way I can put my head at the very edge and let the hose hang over the side. The CPAP pillows seem pretty spendy for what they are and then require a special cover to work properly.
