What is your generation

Post by Linus » Sun Jan 24, 2010 12:49 am

A post here about OSA being a cash cow, various discussions on the political situation for Medical Care and Social Security caused me think about generations and the size of each generation. I think what we are seeing is that the Baby Boomer generation (very large by population and known for income and purchasing power) are coming into the ranks of CPAP devices. Baby boomers are also living longer. I bet the trend in CPAP use will increase for a while while baby boomers arrive and stay in the CPAP market. What is also interesting is that the Generation X is a smaller generation 9-11 million fewer people (in the US). I am part of the Gen X. This generation has its needs too for CPAP, but I think there will be an alarming trend in the CPAP market in 20-30 years because the numbers out there are going to dwindle (drop off in baby boomers) and will be supported by a much smaller generations. Just some food for thought. I read a book called the "Age Curve" and I found that it was very enlightening and interesting because of its explanation of demographics. I am interested in the demographics of the group (just out of curiosity). This is an informal poll for the generation group for users of CPAP. I know that the sampling is that of those who really care about their OSA treatment, and that it may not represent the population as a whole, but again I am just curious...

Linus,

I qualify as one of your oldest thus far - but am sure there is someone older than me yet to vote

That conclusion is not correct because it overlooks a factor that has ten times the effect of the population size of the generations. The big factor is that around 90% of the cases have yet to be diagnosed. Penetration of the undiagnosed market is driving machine sales and the rate of diagnosis will determine the growth rate in machine sales.

But on the other hand, in the 20 to 30 years you mention, surely someone will develop something that will make this primitive CPAP therapy obsolete, eh?

Regarding the aging and generations trends you cited, I am more concerned about the effects on the economy by having a larger and larger percentage of the workforce in retirement. It could mean less affluent times for all generations.

Interesting post Linus.

The 'baby boom' generation is problibly the group with the biggest weight problems...big cause of OSA.

My version.....
The 'baby boom' generation is probably the group with the biggest weight problems......caused BY OSA.

We're also the predominant generation (so far) who has had our butts parked at computer screens for the last 25 - 40 years (or more)......working all hours of the days and nights. One thing this generation has excelled at is "sleep deprivation".

No doubt the baby boomers are the heaviest generation in U.S. history.

I still hold to Dr. Park's hypothesis that underdeveloped jaws (due to diet change) is by far the biggest cause of OSA. But obesity is increasing the severity and prevalence of OSA.

As a note, my BMI is a fit 22 and I have severe OSA.

Rooster,
You are right. The 90% of the non-diagnosed could become 70% or some lower number. In that case there would be growth for the OSA sector. Great point. I too am worried about a larger generation going into retirement with a smaller generation to support it (taxes).

Also for those silents out there, your generation was very much like that of the Greatest but too young to serve in WWII. Silents were also tasked with supporting the larger generation too.

I do hope in 20-30 years that something else comes along to help treat OSA better. I guess a lot of good research will get us there.

I hope this is somewhat thought provoking.

Rock-and-Roll (räk'n roll') n. first so used (1951) by Alan Freed, Cleveland disc jockey, taken from the song "My Baby Rocks Me with a Steady Roll". The use of rock, roll, rock and roll, etc., with reference to sexual intercourse, is traditional in blues, a form of popular music that evolved in the 1950's from rhythm and blues, characterized by the use of electric guitars, a strong rhythm with an accent on the offbeat, and youth-oriented lyrics. A form of popular music arising from and incorporating a variety of musical styles, especially rhythm and blues, country music, and gospel. Originating in the United States in the 1950s, it is characterized by electronically amplified instrumentation, a heavily accented beat, and relatively simple phrase structure

Big Joe Turner
Bill Haley
Elvis Presley
Bo Diddley
Fats Domino
Little Richard
Chuck Berry
They were all born in the twenties and early thirties - the Silent Generation was not so silent.

Yeah, well, I was born late in the Silent Generation and while we invented rock AND roll, it didn't take the dang boomers long to start shoving the roll out of rock AND roll. To make matters worse, the boomers then horned in on country and western, turning it first to country and then - *sigh* - to country rock. I like REAL rock AND roll, I like country western and country. Notice I am NOT that big a fan of rock.

No mate - your generation invented Rock, not Rock n Roll - there is a big difference to us "Silenters".

Rooster has pretty well said it all for your original rock n roll performers.

Big Joe Turner
Bill Haley
Elvis Presley
Bo Diddley
Fats Domino
Little Richard
Chuck Berry

The British experience was based on what came out of America - and as well as the above included -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Cochrane

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddy_Holly

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Lee_Lewis

and, of course, the girls -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brenda_Lee

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaVern_Baker

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanda_Jackson

and then one British rock n roller came along -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff_Richard

but the guy who started the 60's British music revolution was -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lonnie_Donegan

The only American performers I ever saw were The Treniers, in Manchester. Absolutely out of this world. I missed out on Jerry Lee Lewis as he was then banned by the prudish hypocritical British establishment.

I also met Little Richard in Hollywood, and shook his hand, and was amazed with the energy that that guy has.

Not as popular, but among my favourites are Shirley and Lee, and Mickey and Sylvia. Who can ever forget Sylvia in "Love is Strange"?

Long Live Rock n Roll.

And the not so Silent Generation.
