aerophagia - could it last all day - no gas?

Post by frazzled-snoozer » Tue Jan 19, 2010 3:34 pm

Three mornings ago I woke up with a terrible stomach ache. (Been on cpap for about 3 weeks). I got feeling a little better later in the day and we traveled about 2.5 hours away for a family gathering. I got so car sick it was terrible. I felt crummy the rest of the night and the drive home was aweful. The next day I awoke feeling even worse so I figured I had a stomach bug or something. I pretty much was in bed that day. I didn't start feeling better until the evening. Yesterday I was tired but felt ok... like you do after a stomach bug.

Then this morning I awoke to another terrible stomach ache and it took hours for me to be able to get out of bed. Now my whole abdomen just feels sore and achy. I think it's pretty strange to recover from a stomach bug only to get sick a few days later again so I'm wondering if this is actually aerophagia from using cpap. I've been testing out nasal pillows for about a week and have been taping my mouth shut because I was having trouble with air escaping through my mouth.

It can be very painful. I can usually burp to release the air pressure. In bed, this works best lying on the left side, because the esophagus is higher than the stomach in that position - you can burp air without food issues. Or I'll get up and walk around releasing prodigious burps until all is well.

It sounds gross, but it's better than the pain. And not too loud if you keep your mouth closed.

Depending upon my position, if I am relaxed and the pressure is relatively high, I can actually feel small amounts of air entering my stomach at the end of each exhale. That's when my auto unit goes back to full pressure for the inhale.

sometimes the pressure is slightly lowered to stop this, may be easier to sit up in bed to burp
some have the habit of swallowing air, some need to swallow air in order to burp

Sounds like it has been going on for only 3 days. Couldn't it be just a stomach bug? If it continues, check out THIS LINK for more information. Also search on aerophagia, there are lots of posts.
