This is the latest update on this topic: Photo no.1 - one day old, Photo no. 2 - one week old, Photo no. 3 - fifteen days old
No. 1 ImageNo. 2 ImageNo. 3 Image
Monday the 16th day the chicks 'explored' their immediate environment and by night time they were back in the nest. Yesterday they flew a bit further from the nest and today they are flying all over with their parents close by. This was a first for us and a very enriching experience as the nest is just outside our front door in a tree fern. All three chicks are healthy and beautiful. (Of course, all mothers think their babies are the most beautiful in the whole world)

Hi Marietjie

Aren't they lovely photos. You must be very proud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am continually being surprised at how well, and how lovingly, animals and birds, and even reptiles, are looked after by their parents, and especially the mother.

And these birds have 2 mums - they are so lucky

Thanks

Great photos, Marietjie! Thanks for keeping us updated on the little ones' progress.

We say this of children all the time, but it sure does apply to baby birds: They grow up so fast!

Oh, lucky you! As much as I enjoy the pictures, I'm sure watching their growth live has been a thing of breathtaking beauty. I bet you'd be rich if you had a dollar for every time someone in your house said "awwwww" over these past couple weeks.

And Rooster, you are so fowl!

They are so adorable!!!!

I love babies of all sizes and shapes!!! It is a good thing that I don't have a kennel cause I would soon be over-run with pets I couldn't let go of!!

Geez, glad my grandbabies won't grow that fast!!!

What a sweet experience! Pretty little things. Our house has a screened-in porch and there's a torn place high up that I've not had the energy to repair so for the past several last yr a mommy Caroline Wren has come inside and made a nest in one of the potted plants. We first discovered this when she was teaching her 4 babies how to fly...all over the porch, little birds on the outdoor wrought-iron furniture, atop the freezer, atop the storage cabinet, into the potted plants, onto the side tables, onto the small dining table, clinging to the screening...everywhere! Now you have to understand that my mom feeds birds, a lot of birds, we literally have a bird smorgasborg (?sp). To get outside you go thru the porch, so this becomes an interesting challenge as she & the babies get freaked out when we go thru the porch! Watching thru the sliding doors is absolutley hypnotizing! Of course, this only started after the last of our cats joined the Great Cat Goddess BAST in the other world as several of ours were fearsome hunters and would have enjoyed 'our' supplying them with convenient tasty tidbits if they only could figure out how to open those doors...I bet we'd have never been able to unglue them from those doors as she raised her babies.

Regarding Rooster's Sagwa - well, if I catch that cat in our yard it will also join your cats in the other world!

Wow, some of us hosers seem to have more and more in common every day.

I have hanging planters on my front porch, on either side of the steps. Each spring/summer, two pairs of Cassin's Finches build their nests (one in each planter) and raise 3-4 clutches of chicks. Here's an adult male:

Image

and here's a pic of the babies (two birds visible):

Faces only a mother could love.

Both of my cats sit at the front door when the birds are here, watching every move intently, tails whipping silently, chattering to beat the band, as the birds flit about just a few (excrutiatingly unreachable) feet away.

Just curious.
I thought birds were hatched in the spring.
When were these pix taken and where?

just curious.
