Hello
I'm think to buy a second hand cpap. The one I'm using Resmed S8 Elite II belongs to the health service (Quebec) and I'm not authorizer to bring it out of my home. So if I want to travel I need to rent one $$$$.
I have heard the CPAPs can become contaminated. I know there are CPAPs out there with not much time of use, could somebody tell me if I'm crazy to buy a CPAP like that? Is there something I can do to clean it ? Other to wash the hoses, humidifier, filter and mask?
I have been on CPAP for 12 days now.
Thanks
Buying a second hand cpap
Re: Buying a second hand cpap
used CPAPs are often bought and sold a repair man would need to examine it inside, Ive heard of smoke smell from a smokers house, getting pressure adjusted may be difficult
australian, anxiety and insomnia, a CPAP user since 1995, self diagnosed after years of fatigue, 2 cheap CPAPs and respironics comfortgell nose only mask. not one of my many doctors ever asked me if I snored
Re: Buying a second hand cpap
Uh, let me get this straight. You are renting a CPAP that you're not allowed to take with you when you travel? You can't leave the house with this machine?
Can you spell "R-I-P-O-F-F"? I say, buy your own, and kiss those bozos goodbye!!!
I own two used CPAP's. The Sniff test is VITAL. Don't buy used machines without being able to look them over thoroughly IN PERSON. Buying a used machine over the internet is not a great idea. I bought one off Craigslist, another was found at a thrift store by a friend of mine who knew what she was looking at.
Best of luck!

In 17 years of sleep medicine experience I have never ever heard that a patient could not take the machine out of the home. They are marketed specifically to be portable and have voltage converters built in. Get clarification from your DME provider and insurance provider.
Re: Buying a second hand cpap
I wouldn't, and haven't, hesitate purchasing a used or a new machine from CPAPAuction.com.
The used machine was from a guy who was upgraded to a VPAP after 6 or 7 months of use, and was happy to get something from his investment. It's my backup and travel machine now. It was exactly as described and in like-new condition. The new machine was advertised as such and was, in fact, received in a factory sealed box. It's my primary machine now. I spent less than half on both machines, including shipping, than the best on-line price for my new machine, and considerably less than my insurance share if I purchased from a "preferred" DME.
I would suggest looking at the seller's feedback. If I received a machine smelling of smoke or dog, I would certainly note that in my feedback. I assume others would too. As far as contamination goes, it's extremely unlikely. Most sellers are smart enough to exclude used tubing, which may be subject to some such concerns. The innards of a dry CPAP machine are not conducive to viral or bacterial growth, particularly if the machine is shipped mid-winter in the northern states.

Re: Buying a second hand cpap
Thanks for the comments, I appreciate.
The reason why I can't take the machine out of my home is because the CPAP belongs to the hospital. They lend it to certain people who doens't have insurances or lots of money .
They told me, in the past the people brought the machines to places where they lost, contaminated or broke it. So, now if you are accepted to have a lended CPAP you need to agree to not take the machine out or they take it back.
That's why I'm looking for a good opportunity to buy a second hand, gooooood priced CPAP.
I was wondering, if I find a different (I have a Resmed S8 Elite II) CPAP, ex. a Remstar Pro w/C-Flex. Should I notice a difference and then have problems to return wear the Resmed which is my CPAP of everyday use? I can have the Resmed for the rest of my life but I can't take it with me on travel.
