Update: Spoke to Sleep doc, rough night yesterday

Post by GaryG » Fri Dec 18, 2009 9:40 pm

I called my sleep doc today and told him I totally changed my settings from the APAP he recommended to my current CPAP setting. And he was almost as excited as I was at how successful my treatment is. And this was the guy who told me I was wasting my time twiddling with settings.

Also, I had a rough night last night. Woke up at 130 AM and was having difficulty breathing. Remember, I have a deviated septum, and am using a nasal mask primarily now with success most nights. Anyway, I did some googling today, and saw some postings here on deviated septums, and I'm following the advice of our cpap friend, Rooster. I got right on the phone and made an appointment to see Dr. Park a week from Monday for another opinion about my septum, and my OSA treatment plan overall. Will let everyone know down the line what happens.

If you decide to get it fixed... and I'm not even specifically talking about Dr. Park... but any dealings with the hospital. Be careful and make SURE that every medical person knows about your OSA. Especially the anethesiaologist. I went to get mine done (with a bunch of other sinus issues) on Thursday, and they tried to intubate me and couldn't. My airway kept collapsing. The ENT didn't even get a chance to do anything.

Reading this got me to thinking about something and maybe you all can help shed some light on it for me. I suffer from Chronic Atrial Fibrillation. During my last cardio-version I also under went a TEE (trans Esophageal Ecocardiogram) where they slide the tube down your throat.
After the procedure (which is done under anesthesia) my Cardio told me that I fought the TEE and had actually bitten through the mouthpiece that they use. They had to remove the tube, install a new mouthpiece and put me under deeper. Is it possible that the problem was because of OSA? At the time I had not done a sleep study and was aware that I had OSA.
I will be scheduled for another Cardio-version within the next few months so is it important that everyone be aware of the OSA?

There's warnings all over the place about general anethesia and OSA.

What I can tell you is what my doc told me happened to me...

When I went into the OR they put the gas on me... then they tried to take the oxygen mask off and put the tube in, my airway collapsed in about a minute and they were unable to get the tube in. Now there are other things that they could of, and probably should have done, knowing that I have OSA (which was in all of the paperwork)... but they didn't do them.

They can do some kind of intubation while you're awake... and they said that was one option with me.

THE Dr. Park? I'm reading his book right now--Sleep Interrupted. I'd like him to be my sleep doctor.

I'm looking forward to hearing what he says.

Katie,

If you haven't visited it yet, here's Dr. Steven Park's website: http://doctorstevenpark.com/. I think we'd all like to be able to consult with him!

Yes, the Dr. Park. I read his book. Listened to a few of his Tuesday seminars. That's the guy. This is my Christmas/Hannkah present for myself. To get a 2nd opinion about my sleep therapy and to have him take a look at my septum. I live in CT, and am only an hour train ride to NYC. It was very easy to get an appointment.

I just figured going to him I can get a 2nd opinion on my sleep therapy and ENT challenges, and as well, as a holistic minded phyisican, it'll be like a one stop shop for me. Cos he gets it that all of these chronic symptoms from post nasal drip to periodic bouts with GERD, to septum, to laryngytis, to hiatial hernia, etc, etc.. everything is related.

Smart move to consult with Dr. Park when he's so readily available to you!

Just remember the advice from the bottom tag line of someone's avatar here.......one night does not a trend make....... We all have bad nights now and then due to any number of reasons. Don't get all hung up and focused on the bad night.............be positive and focus on the good ones.

No two nights are the same Of course knowing I had two really great therapy nights this week (AI of 0.0 and 0.2), I know that it is possible for me to reach these levels, and feel so much better. So on stinker nights I know they are just aberrations.
