HC150 humidifier for dry mouth

Post by zorrro11 » Sat Dec 05, 2009 7:01 pm

I currently have a resmed machine with built in humidifier and Resmed full face mask. I live in a tropical climate but find that after 2hours of mouth breathing my mouth becomes to dry for sleeping. Has anyone had success by adding on a HC150? would I be able to use both humidifiers at the same time?
Thanks

Can you not breathe through your nose? That's the preferable method for this therapy. Train yourself to keep your tongue stuck to the roof of your mouth while you sleep.
Too much humidity can actually have the effect of closing up your nasal passages. Doing nasal cleansing/rinsing before bedtime should help to keep your nasal passages open. Many times, turning the humidifier down or off (and using passover humidification) can help, too.

Den yes I sleep well with the activa nasal mask and I turn off the humidifier and no dryness but have to tape up hard which is a hassle. Also I have tried nasal rinses but always end up using a nasal spray which cant be doing me any good long term. The full face works well its just the dryness. If I could overcome that i could switch between the 2 masks ,giving me a break from taping and Nasal sprays

Dry mouth can/will occur when mouth-breathing (or leaking) using either type of mask. If you're not mouth-breathing and then no dryness when you turn off the humidifier, are you trying it with the full face or nasal mask? I'm a little confused with what you're doing with which mask. You shouldn't have to tape with a full face mask, but I've read where some people do to prevent mouth-breathing with those masks, too. Some people have even mentioned using a chin strap when using a full face mask, too. Something to moisten your mouth before bed......some have mentioned "Biotene"......

Which full face mask?

den, sorry about the confusion and wasn't able to log in on my real nic but just logged back in

I tape with the Activa nasal mask. chin straps dont work for me . I have used cpap for 3 years now successfully however I have uncontrollable jaw drop just before I nod off and only taping works

The full face is a Quattro and a great mask ,can barely feel a thing at pressure 14 but the resmed S11 humidifier just cant deal with it and its a waste not to be able to use the mask

I have the HC150...it "HELPS". BUT, understand that you are breathing through your nose and down the back of your throat! It won't get to your "dry mouth". When I do get dry mouth I breath INTO my mouth (from the back) for a few seconds and I "wet" my mouth area and go back to sleep. This is where the full face mask comes in if you are a mouth breather...wet all around.

Z I thought about doing that when I first had problems with dry mouth. My humidifier wasn't working properly. do you know that your humidifier is working properly? Now I am fine in the summer but in the winter I had to add a humidifer to my room to supplement the one on my furnace and the one built into my machine.

The water level should be going down and the water and chamber will be warm.

Isn't there a dial on the top of it? "0" would be "Off" (passover mode).

Your profile shows this H3i model:

This is the newer H4i model:

Whichever one you have, both have the humidity control dial.

thanks den, i meant to say where in the electronic menu was the on/off for humidifier. Anyway its working now and had a reasonable night sleep but the leak alarm kept waking me up even though i use extra straps / panty hose for the quattro its still leaks a bit. strange because Im 6ft 4" and a head the size of a lion LOL. When they made the large quattro what were they thinking? A hippo would still get a loose fit.
My problem with dry mouth vanished . In the past I would fill her up with cold water and wake up in 1 hour dryed out. This time i let it heat up a few hours and that did the trick. Thanks everyone for your help
