Stomach pain, Lap-Band, and bipap

Post by lovey » Sat Nov 28, 2009 2:26 am

I had my 7th sleep study at the University of Michigan in September, and they raised my bipap pressures to 23/19 from 18/13. I had lap-band surgery in March, and I was fine until the pressures were raised. For weeks, I had stomach pain. My bariatric surgeon was concerned the new pressures were "blowing up" my pouch. Since I am not supposed to suck from even a straw, obviously this is an issue that is a hard issue to manage ... severe sleep apnea vs. stomach pain with the lap-band. I ended up taking a break from the bipap for 4 days when I finally got my oximeter with alarms a few weeks ago, and that made a big difference.
I am just wondering if other people have had experiences with stomach pain with OSA treatment and the lap-band. If I had it to do over again, I'd do more research on the effects of cpap treatment on a lap-band!

Thanks, Lovey..

Hi Lovey,
Are you just having stomach pain or do you have gas also IE belching and passing gas at night and first thing in the morning. I was on a hight pressure with BiPap and it caused some stomach pain and the gas. I had times that the pain was so severe that it was hard to stand up or move. I would roll back and forth in bed a little until the gas pain went away.
I would talk to both of your doctors about this. I talked to mine and had to have my pressure reduced. I did have a few more events but I didn't have the severe pain.
On the other hand your surgeon is concerned about your pouch being blown up or stretched which would basically negate the surgery you had and possibly cause other problems. How long ago did you have this procedure done and have you had any fills yet?

My wife had this procedure done and she has been on a support site for the band like we have for cpap. I will post the web site she goes to as soon as she tells me what it is.

On the bright side, if you have to have a lower pressure for the gas, at least you will be losing weight which should help with the OSA and the requirement for high pressure.
This web site is for people who use certain doctors, I don't know if this is for everyone but the first site is like a sister site to this onem ob
I don't know if it would help for your doctors to talk to each other.

Here are some lapband web sites that are supposed to be similar to this site.

http://www.lapbandtalk.com
This site is like a sister site to this one only for the lapband.

http://www.realizemysuccess.com
This site is more for people with specific doctors who use this to follow thier pt's progress.

I am 45 years old and my weight was 400 pounds two years ago. I was worried and it became very difficult for me to walk. I decided to have a lap band surgery. The results of the surgery were very good. I lost 25 pounds in first 6 months. At present I have lost approximately 80 pounds. In addition to the lap band I spend many hours in gym and watched out for the things that I ate. My calorie intake was in check always.
