not clean house affecting cpap

Post by catbirdgirl » Fri Nov 27, 2009 5:26 pm

The house my mom lives in is messy/hoardy. I might be borrowing her spare cpap. Is it likely to be impacted by the mess after its been cleaned?

Well, if the air intact on the unit is impacted just clean it out.

A place can be messy but still be clean... are you talking just disorganized but otherwise clean or is this place downright dirty? Might want to fire the machine up and take a whiff of the air coming out.

Put new filters in it. You should be fine.

Either clean or replace or do both depending on what filters your machine uses.

Hi,

How hoardy is it? From watching the TV show Hoarders, Is see that most of the hoarder houses that they feature have lots of rodents, bugs, and even dead animals buried in the mess. I'd certainly not want to use any CPAP machine that had rodents urinate on them, or were exposed to any dust or dirt that might be contaminated with animal dander or other animal remains. If that is the case, then take a pass on it. It isn't worth the risk of getting some horrible respiratory issue over this. BTW, I sure hope that this situation isn't the case with your mom, and that my fears are unfounded.

Mold can be an issue in a hoardy place. My grandson's mother (ex daugher-in-law) lives in a pig pen. His is 8 yrs old and through every winter has constant colds, coughs sinus infections. It's a nasty story and proving she keeps the boy in filth is almost impossible. CPS is a total waste of time.

anyyhow, mold spores in the air can indeed be sucked into the machine. I'd make sure to clean everything accessable with a disenfectant, be sure to wipe out as far as you can reach into the filer housing and definitly replace the filer with brand new. Definiely wash the hose thoroughly.

If you can let the machine run near an open window to flush it with fresh air, that will help too.

I wouldn't say that just cleaning the filters is necessarily the answer. I would honestly have the guts serviced by the manufacturer. I've seen roach nests, mold, slime, and everything in between inside the housing.
