Trying comfort gel

Post by Portageegal » Wed Nov 25, 2009 11:41 am

The DME was here this a.m. with some different masks to try and I ended up with the comfort gel. Let's see what happens. I can always go back to my quattro if I don't like it. I'll let you guys know.

the nose only version fits better if you follow their resizing procedure

they are notorious for breaking where the black ball clip joins t o the mask, ( the DME would have known) although very new production masks are claimed to be improved

avoid strain on the elastic so it will last a bit longer

I have the comfortgel nasal and love it, but I just started therapy on the 20th, I am looking into getting a Full Face Mask because I have allergies and am nasaly congested sometimes, but I cant possibly afford one, in 6 months insurance will pay for one but then I wont have my nasal mask anymore
Started CPAP on 11-20-09
Pressure: 10, Ramp: No, C-Flex: 3 .

Why won't you have your nasal mask anymore? You don't have to give it back, do you?

I had allergies/congestion at 1st too. After reading here,

I tried Claritin (generic loratadine, called Equate Allergy Relief at Walmart, $4 for 30). I cut a 10 mg tablet in half, and take it before bed. Has worked for me.

I've been using the comfort gel for a couple of weeks now and like it. I wish it were a little longer, though. It hits my chin too high and my bottom teeth ache in the a.m. The DME said I didn't need a lg., but I wish he had had one for me to try. I wish they had a medium plus.
I have been feeling sooooooo much better since switching from the quattro. I am actually waking up somewhat refreshed. Even though I wear it tight, I don't have a red triangle on my face, just a little red on the bridge of my nose. I am wearing it tighter than I would like because of leaks, but overall it is more comfortable than the quattro. if I can pad the bridge with a little Dr. Scholl's gel thingy, it may be a keeper.

At the top of the triangle of the mask shape, there is an adjustment you can do by squeezing the two sides together that let you adjust the angle of the mask. You can take pressure off your teeth and get a better fit this way.

This mask caused my bottom teeth to shift in just one week's time. After three weeks...I had to go to the dentist and have treatment for TMJ problems and had to have a retainer made. I won't even go into the bridge of the nose problems.
When your teeth hurt like that, even if it's just for a short while after you awaken, the mask is causing pressure and can possibly cause tooth shifting or movement...and, trust me, this is not something with which you want to deal.
I now wear a different mask and while I still have TMJ problems (any mask would be a problem)...my teeth are no longer being moved by the mask.

Wow,
you have just the opposite problems as me.

I have it in small, Which sets almost off my face.
And is tooo close to my eyes. Can't get a good seal. To get it out of my eyes, I scoot it down some. Then its mashing my nose and almost falling off the chin.

Guess its hard either way, to find a good mask.

I am looking into some thing in a petite. Not too many of those around. Also going to try a Fisher & Paykel HC406 Petite Nasal CPAP Mask with a chin strap and tape.

Good luck in finding a good fit.

Truer words were never spoken (well, "written" ) tree!

The mask is the number one most important part of being able to do CPAP therapy, imho. A mask that works great for one person can be a leaky failure for another person, even if the size is "right."

It can be frustrating (and expensive) to try other masks or other sizes, unless one has an extremely cooperative DME. Lucky is the person who finds a mask he/she can actually sleep comfortably in, early on in their cpap therapy.

If someone out there has a mask that's almost "just right" but has an aggravating thing or two about it, check out the Lab Rat link below. Sometimes a fix that works well for a mask that's not even a brand the person is using will also work to good advantage with another brand of mask.

Some of the fixes are drastic and elaborate. Some are very simple.
What matters is making a mask work for you:
