Yes I know I got to wear it

Post by YELOOCD » Wed Nov 25, 2009 10:40 am

I tried to continue the thread I was using but it just kinda died or I was unclear, or vauge...dunno

I have had the same machine for 6,7,...months...I guess its listed on the post though I switched to the mask I belive is listed then back to the resmed mirage quatrro, I dont like or want the built in humidifier to work...stop putting water in it and turned it all the way down, I have tried all I can finacially til the beginning of the year. I have been just not wearing it, at least then I know what to expect in the morning.
I should just not expect anything, then I would be happ if I had any positive results...which aside from one night I dont think I keep it on for more than an hour once I fall asleep...I am grateful for you suggestions and help ...I just dont see going much further ...anything has got to be better than doing the same (or similar) thing repeatedly only to be disapointed when I do try something new. I have friends who say this is the greatest thing they ever tried ...I wish I had never heard of a cpap...I at least knew before there was no hope.
I know it helps to have a positive attitude ...but that was gone a long time ago and it dont appear to show back up much...

Nothing is going to happen for you until you resolve the unconscious removal of your mask every night. You could take steps to make the system more comfortable such as padding straps, using a hose hanger to keep the mask from being dragged off, and set the alarm on your machine to notify you of a large leak, You are not using the humidifier, and based on your past posts, not using EPR because you don't know how to use the controls.

What would you like to work on first, or have you already given up?

If you have no water in the humidifier, turn it right off or you'll end up burning it.

Geez maybe at this point you should ask for another sleep study; maybe if you’re being observed the techs at the clinic can tell you what’s going on. I’m still taking my mask off in the middle of the night too, but I haven’t even reached two months yet…so I want to give it more time before I go back to my doctor. I have good nights and think “wow this is all I had to do.” and the next night I’m back to taking the mask off again.

I'm right with you. I sleep better without than I do with the cpap. When I wear the cpap I have to be exhausted or I don't I sleep. I'm NOT refreshed in the morning. I have gone weeks without wearing the cpap and those were the best night of sleep that I have gotten. I'm about to turn the machine in to the V.A. in Tampa Fl.

Wetlizard - have you really investigated possible reasons why you're having a bad experience with Cpap? Have you looked into various masks, follow-up studies, "our wisdom" at the top of this forum page, or read some of the posts here? Most of us have so-so success at first, but once we get the right mask (SO important) in the right size, fiddle with the humidifier settings, look into fixes for our possible and commonly present overnight acid reflux, as well as getting help here adjusting pressures when the DME's won't help, we find that we never want to sleep without the machines again. You are cheating yourself if you don't give the treatment a really good (if annoying at times) chance, and/or people here with years of knowledge on making it work.

I have been trying it nearly every night for (I say 6 months, my wife says a little longer) I switched from the mask I have lised back to the resmed quatro, and I switch to human from blue cross regence in Utah I have the same machine listed.

I imagine some of the things mentioned in the reply by the first person (forgive me I cannot remember) are possible without spending too much (which I am unable to do until January, I seem to have whats coming to me without spending money I just don't have during this season of giving all my money to someone.

I will go back and investigate how I may do whatever was suggested.

I also may or may not have mentioned that I have an o2 condenser bleeding into the machine, not that I get why but they either underestimate my ability to remember what they told me or they were not clear about much but Tuesday when the place I got the machine will be open I am going try to get some written or further clarification.

I feel better if i sleep 1 hour with no machine than the entire night having had it on for maybe an hour though I am not entirely sure as to the time.

Below I will give you instruction and links that should help you change some settings, like the leak alarm on your machine. I hope this helps. Do not hesitate to ask your DME clinician for assistance as this is part of their job. It should not cost anything for this simple consultation. In addition to changing the alarm setting, I think it would help to hang the hose above your headboard. This keeps the hose from dragging over the bed and pulling the face mask off. I do this and it makes things much more comfortable. Just place a hook I use a hanger like you would use to hang a wreath on a door, and hook it over the headboard, then tie the hose to it so the mask can reach my face, but does not have a lot of slack that would get tangled on the bed. This is what my hose hanger looks like, but use your imagination to make something to attach to your wall or headboard.

By default the leak alert is off. Since you unconsciously remove your mask, you should change this setting to on. To do this, you must change the option.

The leak alert is in the detailed menu described on page 19 of your manual. A copy of the manual is here:viewtopic/t46980/posting.php?mode=quote&f=1&p=423362. If you are unable to access this menu, your DME will probably help you since this is supposed to be a user-selectable option. The leak alert option is the last item in the SETTINGS menu.

Here are the basic instructions for changing menu settings:

HOW TO ENTER THE MENU SCREENS
When the S8 AUTOSET VANTAGE standby (RAMP or SETTLING) screen is displayed you will see the word “menu” in the left-hand corner. To select an S8 AUTOSET VANTAGE menu, press the Left key.

HOW TO SCROLL THROUGH THE MENU
When you are in the menu, scroll through items by pressing the Up or Down keys.

HOW TO CHANGE A SETTING OPTION
When you have scrolled to the item you require:
1. Press the Left key (Change).
2. Press the Up or Down keys until you see the setting option that you require.
3. Press the Left key (Apply) to select the setting option.
If you wish to exit without changing the option, press the Right key (Cancel).

HOW TO EXIT OUT OF A MENU
Press the Right key (Exit). This will take you back to the standby (RAMP or
SETTLING) screen.

HOW TO EXIT OUT OF AN ITEM WITHIN THE MENU
Press the Right key (Exit).

Good luck!

Hi YELOOCD

I am really sorry to read that you are having such difficulties.

The previous posters have given you some very good suggestions, if you need help in carrying them out you know where to go. Recovery from Obstructive Sleep Apnea is what your life is currently about. Obstacles are challenges you have to face, and ask for help if you need to - both on the Forum and outside the Forum.

I kid you not -

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=44824&p=400479#p400479

works.

Your main challenge now is to put the suggestions into practice, and perhaps try a different mask. If you want to try a FlexiFit 432 Large then PM me.

Remember that each day is a new beginning, and DOES NOT have to be a repeat of yesterday.

Keep at it, mate.

cheers

Mars

Don't listen to those morons. CPAP, as a therapy, is clumsy, uncomfortable, difficult to implement effectively, unforgiving and has aggravating side effects. "Greatest" just does not apply to CPAP.

On the other hand, untreated sleep apnea is a condition that can cause a very poor quality of life, serious health problems, and short life span. Where your friends may have a point, is that CPAP, despite its crude approach, is just about the only hope to avoid all those bad consequences of sleep apnea.

If you choose to treat your sleep apnea, don't try CPAP. For most people, success with CPAP requires a determined commitment. If you don't make that commitment, you are very likely to only frustrate yourself and fail to ever achieve a good therapy.

I do hope you make the commitment and use the resources members here offer you to achieve an excellent control of your sleep apnea. Many of us overcame significant difficulties and eventually achieved a good degree of success.
