Upgrading to Windows 7 for Encore Pro

Post by Gerryk » Sat Nov 21, 2009 3:58 pm

I have Encore pro and have it installed on an older computer but it is going down hill fast. I built this computer last spring and put Vista Ultimate on it then found out that it was nearly impossible to install and run Encore pro on Vitsa Ultimate. I am considering upgrading and installing Windows 7 ultimate on here so that I can install and run Encore Pro. Hopefully I can find the disk and installation instructions I had for Encore Pro.
Has anyone here upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate and then installaed Encore Pro?

From what I read Encore Pro will run on Windows 7 Ultimate but you have to download and run a virtual 32 bit program.

I'm not sure why you think you need "Ultimate" edition. The Windows 7 Home Premium should do every thing you need unless you need to connect or manage a network domain, in which case Professional is appropriate. Professional also enables a WinXP emulation mode, so you know that devices with Windows XP drivers will work. Ultimate adds 35 languages to Pro. You need to determine if you need a 32 or 64 bit program, and most people can use home premium version.

By Encore Pro, do you mean version 1.8+? The heart of Encore Pro is a SQL database, and Windows 7 should have no problems with that or with the MAKO 3000 Smartcard reader driver.

I have Vista ultimate for a few reasons. First it had a couple options I liked, second I had the top version of XP on my wives computer and were trying to get our networked computers on a similar level even with different versions of windows, third I was looking at some programs that were 64 bit and last, I use this one to manage our home network, which I am still working on
But I don't know much about Windows 7 is the home versions 64 bit and have all the security of the other one. What does the ultimate have that the home doesn't? I tried to look on the Microsoft web site and that wasn't much help

Here is a simple comparison of the different flavors of windows 7. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... fault.aspx

Windows 7 home comes in both a 32 and 64 bit version. Check to be sure you get the one you need. Since you are running Vista Ultimate, Windows 7 Ultimate lets you install the upgrade without formatting the disk http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... tions.aspx. I think a clean install is a good idea, but the upgrade would certainly be easier. So the only draw back is Ultimate upgrade is about $100 more expensive than Home premium.

Thanks just a quick glance one feature I really like is the ability to do automated backups to the network with professional and ultimate. I have not been able to do a complete system backup to my network storage with Vista but I can backup my files to the network storage. I don't have a problem doing a clean install as I keep everything backed up and don't store much on here. The only problem I would have is the pain I had installing the OS in the first place because I had set it up as two drives running as one to split the data and two identical drives running a constant backup and then two drives for data storage. I know it's overkill but I have lost data before because someone downloaded a font. I lost several thousand pictures that we took over a 7 month period of the kids and our vacation.

I did look online and Best buy has a sale right now if you buy a laptop you will get 100 bucks off windows 7 upgrade. Well my laptop is showing it's age as it is almost ten years old. I don't need a real powerful laptop I don't do that stuff on it, just use it when I am mobile for email writing letters and downloading small bits of data. They have laptops for 400 bucks then you get 100 off the software.

Another way to get a less expensive copy of Windows 7 is to buy some hardware, like RAM modules, a disk drive or new DVD reader, and get the OEM version. It is sold to computer builders, but most stores will sell it with any hardware. It is the full version rather than upgrade, and it is a whole lot less expensive. Check out this link:

Thanks, that's how I usually get my OS. I have built the last seven computers we have had, well except for the laptops. I get the parts and then the OEM version. Yes, I have found that sometimes they will sell the OEM even if you just buy one or two components.

I need a new laptop and by buying one I can get the upgrade for 119 which is less than the oem.

Thanks again.

It has to do with cpap and sleep apnea because I am looking to run Encore pro software to download my sleep data to email it to my sleep lab that's what it has to do with it. Also Encore pro won't run under Windows Vista Ultimate without several tweeks and manipulations. Any other questions? I don't really see how this can bother you so much that you would have to post about it.

Windows 7 comes in 32bit and 64bit in the same package. You just have to decide if you want Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate. Then Upgrade or Full Version. If you have a 64bit OS on your computer but want 32bit you will need to do a full install. The upgrade option on the full version of Windows 7 only applies to Windows XP. For Windows XP Mode and Virtual PC you will need a processor that is capable of virtualization and need to activate it in the BIOS before installing Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode. If you have Norton Internet Security 2009 you will need to get 2010 because Win 7 does not recognize it. XP Mode is for Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate.
I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Professional and XP Mode and I got it to install and read from the card. I am going to try Encore Pro 1.8 later this week.
